Principal's Message
Current events continue to have an impact on our country and our community. They also allow us as a learning community to put into practice our ability to have respectful conversations of various ideas and opinions. As events began unfolding in Washington DC last week, I shared the following with the staff:
This comes at an already challenging time for all of us, with the potential for creating more anxiety and uncertainty. However, we work, teach, and learn in a strong district with a strong sense of community that supports us during uncertain times. And, ISB staff, students and families form a community within the larger community that supports powerful ideals and inquiry-based learning that serve us well during challenging times. As much as any other time, empathy and understanding of multiple perspectives is especially important for us all. Your role as the moderator or facilitator is especially critical. While we all have our own opinions and/or political positions, this is the time to really let that inquiry model allow students to explore their own thoughts and opinions about the world they will soon enter as young adults.
Teaching and learning was not disrupted by these events, and I know from teachers that students were interested but not overly distracted. This reality is certainly a tribute to the strength of the ISB community of teachers, students, and families.
We will be finishing second quarter in a few weeks. Our finals schedule is different from the other schools and you will find a description of that later in this newsletter. Thank you for your ongoing support of your children and of the school.
Sincerely,
Janice Adams
Tuesday is A Day & Wednesday is B Day Next Week
Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so there are no classes for students. Since it is a 4-day student week, there is also a change in the class meeting schedule. Tuesday and Thursday will be A Days. Wednesday and Friday will be B Days.
Also, Friday, February 5th will be a Grading Day, no school for students.
Semester I Finals
Middle school students do not take finals. High School teachers this year have been given the option to give a final exam or assessment, and they may choose from two alternate dates to give them.
ISB will not be on a special schedule for finals and there will be no early release. All A days will have periods 1, 3, 5 and 7 at their regularly scheduled times. All B days will have periods 2, 4, 6 and 8 at their regularly scheduled times.
High school teachers will communicate to their students which optional day they have chosen for the final in each class.
This is the schedule teachers and students will follow for any finals that may be given:
Thursday, January 21 - A Day - Finals Periods 1 & 5
Friday, January 22 - B Day - Finals Periods 4 & 8
Monday, January 25 - A Day - Finals Periods 3 & 7
Tuesday, January 26 - B Day - Finals Periods 2 & 6
Thursday, January 28 - A Day - Finals Periods 1 & 5
Friday, January 29 - B Day - Finals Periods 4 & 8
Monday, February 1 - A Day - Finals Periods 3 & 7
Tuesday, February 2 - B Day - Finals Periods 2 & 6
Advisory Focus - Digital Citizenship
As we all navigate spending more time online, we will be taking time in Advisory this week to talk about Digital Citizenship. The district's website has some helpful tools and links for parents who are helping keep kids motivated and connected to their digital classrooms. We recommend that you review or create a digital citizenship agreement with your child(ren) so everyone is clear on expectations relating to technology use, setting healthy boundaries, and managing screen time.

Math Tutoring
Need help in math? Here are two possible resources:
ISB's Math Honor Society is hosting Math Tutoring sessions every Wednesday from 12-1 pm (on school days only). Students can find the Zoom link and password in their grade level Canvas Course. Please do not share the link with anyone outside of the ISB community.
Monday-Thursday from 5-6 pm, Western Oregon University's Math Education students are staffing a daily math homework help session for students in Grades 4-12. Each session will have at least two tutors available and on Tuesdays a Spanish-speaking tutor will be available. All sessions are recorded to protect both WOU and 4-12 grade students. WOU expects that all students are supervised by an adult during the tutoring sessions. Questions? Contact WOU's Dr. Rachel Harrington at harringtonr@wou.edu or 503-838-8831.
