Reading
We started a new unit on comparing and contrasting within and among texts. We are looking for deeper answers - things like “ the text says that tornadoes can last a few minutes, but hurricanes can last for days but both can cause a lot of damage.” We are certainly moving away from basic answers like , “ both characters are boys” or “ that dog is nice but the cat is bad.”
Math
Word problems involving measurement ! We are converting inches to feet and feet to inches in our answers - yes this is tricky !

A few thoughts on motivation and bullying…
As the years pass I am constantly thankful that we have such a great group of kids here at Converse. I even think to myself, “We don’t often deal with bullying.” In the past we have incorporated Jim “Basketball” Jones into our Character Counts program with the message of doing your best, thinking positively and supporting your “teammates.” A few years ago, Mrs. Kinch sent the staff a message from Mr. Jones, part of which I’d like to share with you here. He gave a scenario of a player ready to try to win the game for his team and his coach saying to him “don’t miss.” He felt this idea of using a negative comment to get a good result seemed backwards- I agree! We should be using positive comments to yield a positive result. The following is Mr. Jones’s thoughts about using the word don’t in regards to bullying.
“If we never use “don’t” in our plead to encourage, motivate, or give advice to our youth, then why do we use “Don’t” while promoting anti-bully messages? We teach our students; not to stand for bullying. Anti-organizations pride themselves behind phrases such as: “Don’t Be A Bully”, “Don’t Bully Others”, “Don’t Feed The Bully”, or “Don’t Bully My Breed”. These slogans and many others all have strong messages with substance. But instead of rallying behind a “Don’t”, lets shift our focus on rallying behind a “Do”. An action that goes a step further against bullying that promotes an act of kindness! Take a stand against bullying by taking action towards applying kindness by using our manners and caring for one another rather. The idea of applying kindness to one another is uplifting and creates a strong stance against bullying.”
Jim “Basketball” Jones - National Youth Motivational Speaker
I really thought this was a good thought to keep in mind as spring sports get underway. Using positive language can go a long way in setting up a positive bully-free atmosphere. Sometimes children are “joking” or “playing around” and don’t realize they are hurting someone’s feelings. By asking questions such as “Was that nice?”, “Was that friendly?” “Were you being kind?” we can help foster a sense of empathy and compassion for others while the children realize the “joking” and “playing around” can hurt others.
We have also learned that bullying is defined with 3 parts
1. I was scared
2. It was on purpose
3. It has happened repeatedly
Many times we use the term "bullying" to define a mean, unkind act. But to truly be bullying all three parts must be in place.
