Congratulations to North Central’s 2023 Spokane Scholars, named below. We are so proud of you! Spokane Author Visits NC
Acclaimed author and Spokane native Jess Walter visited North Central High School on Friday to share his love of writing and storytelling with students. He talked about his writing process and how he sparks creativity by journaling and writing three or four hours each day.
Walter was also there to promote and ask for entries to Spark Central’s Ignite, an art and literary journal for Spokane teens. North Central students Savannah Gordon and Callie Toney are editors for Ignite. Visit spark-central.org/ignite for details.
Groovy Shoes
As Ms. Muñoz said, "Our kids were amazing and cheered their hearts out for each other, for NC pride, for their staff, for this place they call home, and, ultimately, for the shoes...I am consistently reminded of how fortunate I am to work with this staff that cares so much for our students! You all are truly magical! Thank you for helping us get that 7-peat!!!"

Announcements and Events
One Pack Day on Thursday
This week, NC hosts One Pack Day on Thursday. This event has a tragic beginning. Early 2018, NCHS suffered through the fourth student death by suicide in only thirteen months. These losses were devasting, and in some ways even more troublesome because the NC community had been working to provide resources and awareness for students for quite some time.
Students were approaching administrators, counselors, and teachers asking for what they could do differently to ensure every student felt important. The conversations were heartbreaking. The school was quieter, everyone was a bit off. A heavy feeling permeated our school. The need for a significant response was evident: a need to increase the understanding of how teenagers deal with stress, anxiety, and mental illness.
The tragedies and aftereffects mobilized staff and student leaders to organize an event to raise awareness and help students understand what to look for and how to respond. This event is One Pack Day. The purpose of One Pack Day is to educate our youth and staff about mental health and wellbeing, resources to support mental health, and actions to take when you are concerned about a friend. It’s about the importance of building a community that is focused on unity and creating a safe environment for each individual.
The concerns of 2018 are the concerns of today. Here are a few data points:
- 19% of youth ages 12-17 experienced major depression.
- Over 2.5 million youth in the U.S. have severe depression.
- Multiracial youth are at greatest risk.
- Over 60% of youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment.
- Fewer than 1 in 3 youth with severe depression receive consistent mental health care.
- Rates of substance use are increasing for youth.
Organizing an event that focuses on mental health is challenging. The conversation and questions are difficult. As we come together as one community, One Pack, please help students understand the significance of this event, the importance of having this conversation.

Course Registration Updates for Fall, 2023
This week students worked on course registration for next year. During advisory they were able to watch videos and plan for their classes. In case your student missed some or all of the days, they can view all resources for their grade level online! Please visit Enroll / NC Registration (spokaneschools.org) and select the grade your student will be in NEXT year to view resources. The best place to start is to watch the counselor video explaining specific requirements for the graduation level your student is in. Your student’s counselor will meet with them in the month of February to go over their course wish list, and finalize the registration, so you still have time to look at the materials before then!
