5H Weekly News
14th February 2016
Dear Parents,
I hope you are all having a fantastic day with your loved ones.
This week, we are looking forward to attending the Hearts To Serve assembly, which kicks of the main, school-wide fundraiser for the year. This fundraiser raises money for medication for a TB clinic in North Korea. The school has supported this charity for a number of years, and has provided the medicine to treat many patients suffering from TB. Special T-shirts, that support this cause, can be purchased from the ES lobby this week. They are 15,000 KRW, and the proceeds go to the charity. The image below represents the design this year.

The Week Ahead
We will continue learning to divide decimals by tens, hundreds and thousands, as well as by 1-digit whole numbers. We will then look at estimating decimals. Finally, we will solve some real-world problems that involve multiplying and dividing decimals.
Writing
Students have all started to draft their own research-based argument essays that focus on a their chosen topics. This week, they will ensure that their arguments have a balance of evidence and analysis, and consider the importance of acknowledging and rebutting counter claims in their arguments.
Reading
As some groups are finishing their group fiction novels, they are beginning to read non-fiction texts together, and picking out the key points from various parts of the text. Most of the non-fiction texts are linked with our science unit on the moon and space.
Social Studies
After discussing some of the practical and social aspects of establishing a moon colony, students will use their building plans to begin building on Minecraft EDU. This is a part of the unit that students have been anticipating with excitement. We will only use creative mode for this activity, and the project will only run for about 8 school days. It will give students the opportunity to bring their colony to life, and develop problem solving and critical thinking skills as they collaborate.
