New Digital Backpack Promotes Community Opportunities
We are excited to share a "new look" to how we share both district and community opportunities. Our digital backpack will list a wide variety of events, classes, or other opportunities.
You can filter these by categories or age ranges. The categories are:

Welcoming Week Sept. 12-16
West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) is excited to participate in a nationwide program called Welcoming Week. We join thousands of other organizations across the country to bring together families of all backgrounds and create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Events Sept. 12-16
- In partnership with the district's Nutrition department, students can choose to try food from all around the world.
- Watch the documentary, Simple as Water, Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Indian Hills Junior High.
- Dress up in cultural clothes that represent your heritage on Friday, Sept. 16.
Student-Driven “RISE” Mural Unveiled at Valley High School
West Des Moines Community Schools officially unveiled a new, student-driven mural with a reception on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, at Valley High School. Inspired by Valley student group Refugee and Immigrant Student Embassy (RISE) and brought to life by artist Jill Wells, the 18-by-13-foot mural serves to “advocate for the refugee and immigrant student population at Valley High School.”
Homecoming Week Sept. 19-24
Come support your Tigers and celebrate our West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) spirit during Valley High School's Homecoming 2022! This year's theme is "Destination Homecoming."
We’ll be celebrating with a variety of activities from Sept. 19-24, 2022.
We look forward to welcoming you and wish everyone a fun and memorable Homecoming 2022!
Powderpuff Football
MONDAY, SEPT. 19
Powderpuff football games start at 7 p.m. and will be played at Tiger Field. Free admission.
Parade and Carnival
THURSDAY, SEPT. 22
The Homecoming parade starts at 5:45 p.m. and will begin at Valley Southwoods and end outside Valley Stadium (rain location: Southwoods gym).
The Homecoming carnival follows the parade from 6:15-8:30 p.m. and will be held outside Valley Stadium.
Football Game
FRIDAY, SEPT. 23
Valley's Homecoming football game starts at 7 p.m. and will be played at Valley Stadium. The Tigers will face the Marshalltown Bobcats. Please visit ValleyTigers.com for more information about the game.
Valley’s Mayada Alwan Earns DEI Excellence Award
Valley High School senior Mayada Alwan was honored as the Student Leader of the Year at the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce’s (Chamber) second annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workplace Excellence Awards (DEI Awards) on Sept. 1, 2022. She was recognized for her passionate work surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion, from co-authoring an anti-hate speech policy for Valley and presenting at the 2022 Des Moines Human Rights Symposium to leadership within student groups like Refugee and Immigrant Student Embassy (RISE), Community of Racial Equity (CORE) for Advancement, and World Cultures Club.
Family-Friendly Raccoon River Rally Oct. 8
Save the date and join the West Des Moines Community for the 2nd Annual Raccoon River Rally at Raccoon River Park on Saturday, October 8! This fall festival is a family-friendly event featuring live music, food trucks, activities for families, bike ride through West Des Moines, and cardboard boat races on Blue Heron Lake. The event is organized by the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and City of West Des Moines. Learn more at wdmchamber.org/rally.
