Morrill Act (1862)

  1. This act passed on July 2, 1862.
  2. This act made it possible for new western states to establish colleges for their citizens.
  3. This act committed the Federal Government to give each state 30,000 acres of public land.

Pendleton Act (1883)

  1. This act got approved on January 16, 1883.
  2. This established a merit-based system of selection government officials and supervising their work.
  3. The act was signed into law by Senator George Hunt President of Ohio.

Ellis Island (1892)

  1. Ellis Island opened in 1892 as a federal immigrantion station.
  2. It served for more than 60 years.
  3. Millions of newly arrived immigrants passed through the station.
