Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
School Report Cards were recently released by the state. You will find the Oak Hills and District Report Cards linked below. Oak Hills received a Level 5 for Student Achievement. That essentially means that our school is in the top 10 % of elementary schools based on the average percentage of students meeting and exceeding national standards. However, we received a level 4 for student growth. The growth indicator measures how our students did relation to their individual growth standards. Additionally, we received a level 3 for student growth in specific sub groups.
Although my understanding is most elementary schools went down in their ratings and we performed better than schools similar to us, we know we have much work to do. At a recent meeting, we took a deeper look at the data of the Smarter Balanced Assessment. We analyzed areas in which our students didn’t perform as well and collectively committed to providing students with practice opportunities throughout the school year. Additionally, we learned what levels of questioning Smarter Balance uses. Level 1 questions are recall questions and only account for 3-5% of the assessment. Level 2 questions which require students to use a skill or apply a concept account for 30% of the assessment. Level 3 questions are also 30% of the assessment and require strategic thinking, and finally Level 4 questions require extended thinking and are about 35% of the assessment. We need to focus this year more on Level 2, 3, and 4 questions.
We have also created time every month for our support teachers (intervention, English Language Learner, and Resource Room teachers) to meet with every grade level team to make sure we are all on the same page on how we support our most impacted students. Next year, the state will have a new rating criteria for schools. I will keep you posted on what I learn in the spring.
On another note, I understand we have surpassed our goal for the Jog-A-Thon!! Thank you so much. As promised, Jennifer will be a unicorn and I will be a Picachu next Thursday. We will also be involved in a tricycle race. Wish us luck! Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our school.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner

WE WANT YOU!
Parents are a great asset to our school. Please help us show off the rich culture of our school community! We invite you to share a special talent with our students in a 10-15 minute showcase on Wednesday, November 29th. Do you play an instrument? Can you present a cultural dance? Do you do something dynamic for a career? Or do you have a different idea? Please share it!! You would be presenting to each grade level between 8am and 1pm. We value you as role models, and know the students would love to learn from you. All presenters will need to complete an application and background check. Please refer to https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/depts/CCI/volunteer-engage for more information.
