Hurricane Relief Efforts
How to give to Dorian relief...
After striking the Bahamas on Sept. 1, Hurricane Dorian caused "vast destruction" and left 70,000 people in need of immediate humanitarian relief, says Mark Lowcock, head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church already is fielding requests to help those being evacuated from the “unprecedented devastation” to receive basic supplies and find a place to live, says its president, the Rev. L. Carla Culmer.
UMCOR (The United Methodist Committee On Relief) is already working to help with relief efforts in the Bahamas by awarding a solidarity grant to Bahamas Methodist Habitat, the disaster ministry of the Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church. This grant provides immediate, emergency short term funding to address the basic human needs of those affected by this catastrophic storm. UMCOR will also provide long-term assistance to the people of the Bahamas as needs are identified.
UMCOR is already on the ground in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, too, providing assistance to hurricane victims in these states.
To provide financial assistance to the Bahamas and/or our brothers and sisters on the US East Coast through the United Methodist Church, go to the UMCOR website at www.umcmission.org/umcor
Follow the tabs on their homepage to give directly to Doria-related international or US relief efforts.
If you would prefer to contribute via check, make your check to Prospect with "Bahamas relief" or "US Relief" on the memo line. We will send a check to UMCOR through our conference office.
