HIGH SCHOOL AT FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY
What’s new with high school?
Last year, we had about ~80 high school students and 8 seniors. This year, we have 114 high schoolers and 16 seniors. We are growing! Next year, we will have an entire high school area developed after the expansion.
How does my child receive classes?
Every year, we revisit the Credit Evaluation form which outlines the classes needed to take in order to graduate from FSA. In addition to the state of Georgia requirements, we keep our students on a path of rigor which will fulfill the HOPE and university requirements. Every year, the parent(s) and student(s) are invited to meet with the counselor to discuss classes, future classes, extracurriculars, service, and any other items that affect the students’ school success.
When we place students into classes, we take the following into consideration: previous courses and grades, MAP scores in math and reading/writing, PSAT Scores, AP exam scores, attitude and behaviors in class, and teacher observations. We aim to create schedules for students that will challenge them, but also allow them to thrive.
At FSA, we have high expectations for our students. While other schools may prepare their students for AP level work, we put an emphasis on the AP exam preparation as well. With the skills they develop here, the goal is to help them be successful in their future SAT, ACT, college acceptances, and professional endeavors.
How do we do it?
Along with the facilities we have in place, we also utilize a platform called Naviance. Your student has access to this profile. It enables your student(s) to build an online portfolio and even apply to colleges. If you would like a parent account, please email Ms. Agha.
When do we do it?
Built into the schedule, we have College Prep time. During that time, high school students will receive AP supplemental support, SAT prep, or college guidance time that may include college representatives and professional speakers from the community. Afterschool clubs are also built into the schedule to allow maximum involvement and tutoring time. For additional resources, visit

How Will I Pay for College and Other Parent Worries
Earlier this year, we surveyed thousands of parents across the country to better understand what worries them most about the college planning process. Here are their top concerns:
1.The price tag
2.College match
3.Finding scholarships
4.Student loan debt
5.The SAT® and ACT®
6.Campus safety
7.Admissions options
8.Their child's newfound independence
9.The college application process
10.Financial aid
We pulled together key resources and information to help you navigate this journey to college. Visit the Parent Worry Index to learn more about how to address some of your concerns.
Solar Car Club
FSA's Solar Car Club has been hard at work on their impressive solar car! The club hopes to join in the Solar Car challenge and attend the 2020 Closed Track Event at the Texas Motor Speedway with Qualifier. We will be sure to keep you updated on this new club at FSA! Good luck!
"The Solar Car Challenge is the top project-based STEM Initiative helping motivate students in Science, Engineering, and Alternative Energy. In 1993, the Solar Car Team launched an education program to teach high school students how to build and safely race roadworthy solar cars. The Solar Education Program met this objective, and worked to provide curriculum materials, on-site visits, and workshop opportunities for high schools across the country. This program was designed to motivate students in the sciences, engineering, and technology. The end product of each two-year education cycle is the Solar Car Challenge: a closed-track event at the world famous Texas Motor Speedway, or a cross country race designed to give students an opportunity to display and drive their solar cars.
National sponsors for the Solar Car Challenge: Hunt Oil Company, Dell Computers, Green Mountain Energy, The Acclivus Corporation, Austin Energy, Earth Day Texas, Lockheed-Martin, and Texas Instruments. The Solar Car Challenge is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit education foundation." (http://www.solarcarchallenge.org/challenge/about.shtml)
29th Annual Rivers Alive! Clean-Up Saturday, September 28, 2019
We have officially signed up for the Rivers Alive Cleanup in Roswell on September 28th! There is a waiver posted at the bottom of this entry. Each volunteer has to complete the form and either bring it to Mrs. Beck, or bring it to the event! Students, this would be a fantastic opportunity to earn volunteer hours!
"Rivers Alive is Georgia's annual volunteer waterway cleanup event that targets all waterways in the State including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches, and wetlands. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources. Rivers Alive is held annually each fall and is a program of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division Outreach Program.
Georgia's 70,150 miles of streams and rivers need your help. Our waterways provide us with fresh drinking water, great recreational opportunities like canoeing and fishing, and they serve as a pleasant respite from our busy day to day lives. This is your opportunity to help protect one of our most precious resources. Help us clean our rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands by joining in support of Rivers Alive." Do you know of any juniors or seniors looking for leadership development & service opportunities? Spread the word – Youth United (YU) is the place for them!
Youth United offers a unique opportunity for 16 selected students to participate in a cost-free program throughout the school year. These students will receive specialized sessions on topics ranging from public speaking to executive level guest speakers, and receive exclusive experiences like a behind-the-scenes tour at the State Capitol. The students will do a deep dive into what’s going on in their communities, as they are charged with planning and hosting innovative and high-impact service opportunities for students around Atlanta. It’s also a great way to knock out those volunteer hours! Through the program, students grow as leaders and as civil servants. This program is highly competitive and requires an essay and interview to apply.
The application can be found on our website, and it will be open until August 31st. Contact youthunited@unitedwayatlanta.org with any questions or student referrals!

Home Visits; A Great Activity for Your Student, No Matter Their Grade Level!
Here is some feedback from our parents:
- “Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
- “We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
- “Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
- “We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student’s attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
- “I just wanted to write on behalf of my husband and I and thank you for visiting our child. He loved having you both come and visit. We appreciate the level of caring and attention that you have consistently shown our family. It is rare to see such a dedication from teachers for their jobs. We can tell that you love teaching and you care for our children. Thank you for visiting our child when he was not feeling well.”
How can I schedule a home visit?
Very simple.
To schedule a middle or high school school home visit: Simply email sduman@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Mr. Duman will be in touch to confirm final details.
Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings. For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to homevisit@fultonscienceacademy.org
