Carolyn Brown, of Hey Dude, Nice Shoes, will be presenting to parents on Wednesday, September 19, at 6:30 pm in the PAC. Her presentation focuses on proactive and effective supports and solutions for parents on issues such as bullying and cyber-bullying. If you missed her amazing presentation last year, you will want to make plans to attend!
Carolyn Brown started speaking to groups about parenting perspective about six years ago. A word kept bubbling up in her discussions...Bullying. She would hear it on the radio, read it in the headlines and see it on the news.
Why is this suddenly such an epidemic and WHAT makes it different now?
In the past two years she has developed an anti-bullying/ pro-kindness workshop for students and their parents. "Hey Dude, nice shoes" is a presentation geared at educating parents about the who, what, when, where, whys and hows of Bullying. She has traveled all over the state delivering this message to thousands of students and their parents. Her goal is to educate and inspire children and adults alike to be the change and make a positive difference in our world. She covers everything from basic definitions and policies to recent legislation pertaining to bullying in schools. Through personal stories...and some hilarious pictures...she makes one relatable point - we are all human. We all are fighting a battle that no one knows anything about and we all can take a moment to be kind.

Get To Know Our Staff!
Alison Atkinson - Counselor
Where are you originally from? Concordia, MO then moved to Grain Valley, MO after college. I've lived in Missouri my entire life until this summer.
What led you to become a counselor? How long have you been in education?
My Bachelor's degree is in Psychology. I started that degree planning to be a Child Psychologist. As I worked through my program, I started researching other careers where I could work in the mental health field that did not require a doctorate degree. I chose School Counseling because I like working with adolescents-helping them through challenges and celebrating their success. My high school counselor was, and still is, a great mentor to me. She helped me so much in high school and the relationship I had with her helped to steer me into this career.
This is my 11th year as a school counselor: 2 years at high school, and 9 at middle school.
Tell us about your family. My husband, Reid, and I have been married for 10 years. He is a band director at Vista Ridge HS in Leander ISD. We have 2 kids: Ainsley, 5, and Paxton, 2, who make me a better person each day!
What are your favorite hobbies? My hobbies pretty much revolve around my kids right now. So, I spend a lot of time playing Thomas the Train with Paxton and doing art projects with Ainsley. We are also enjoying exploring the Austin area together as a family.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose? Out of the places I've been, I'd choose Hawaii!
Who inspires you and why? My children inspire me to be the best version of myself each day. My husband's work ethic and drive inspire me. My mom inspires me with her constant unconditional love for her family.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? All throughout elementary school, I wanted to be a math teacher.
Kim Alamo - 6th Grade Science
Where are you originally from? I was born in Texas and have spent most of my life as a Texan. As a child, I saw all parts of the world, as my dad was in the military. We visited Germany and Panama when I was in elementary school. Texas is my home!
What led you to become a teacher? How long have you been teaching? I have been in education for 17 years. I love watching the faces of students light up when they are successful and learning great things!
Tell us about your family. Our family is centered around baseball! My husband was a pitcher in college and became a coach at several different universities. He loves instructing students, like me, but from the baseball side of life. Our son, Jackson was born and lives in baseball! He wants to attend and pitch for the Air Force Academy after he graduates.
What are your favorite hobbies? We enjoy playing ball in the sun next to the lake!
What is your favorite food? My favorite treat is to have coffee and chocolate any time of the day!
Did you have any jobs before you became a teacher? What were they? Before teaching, I was a dental assistant at a pediatric dentist office. Helping children brings me joy!
Do you have any pets? We have a great big German Shepherd baby at home! We named him Apollo from the movie “Rocky” because he is huge! He does not know that he weighs 110 pounds and tries to climb up in your lap! He acts like he is human and loves to do everything with us!
