We are currently into our last week of covering theme and story elements in reading. The kids will have covered character, setting, plot, problem and solution, and theme. They will know how to identify a conflict in a story and they will be able to write a good summary using the "somebody, wanted, but, so, then" model. Our next unit will be comparing and contrasting fiction texts.
In class we are currently reading a group novel. It is Maniac Mcgee. The kids really are enjoying this. This book will be used in future reading instructions and will be an AR point opportunity as long as they are paying attention in class.
In writing, the kids have finished or are very close to finishing their spooktacular stories. Next week we will be writing a mystery in 3rd person. These two pieces will be averaged together to form their second quarter writing grade for 3rd Person Narrative.
Remember to have your child read every night. Their homework expectation is that they do read and meet their AR goal. I appreciate you helping remind the kids of this so they are not scrambling at the end of the quarter. It would be helpful for you to do random checks to see where they are. Last quarter was a struggle for some and did create undo stress. I hope that with them giving an update to both you and me, they will be more successful.

Our next unit is for our field trip! We are all so very excited for this. We will be spending November covering economics and preparing to have a successful field trip where they will get to apply all their knowledge to run a business. This field trip is a big one and it will require some assistance from any parents or grandparents that would love spending time at their child's last field trip. We will be needing 15-25 volunteers and would absolutely love anyone we can get. It is a full day commitment on December 4. Trust me when I say, "You will have a great time and your kids will love having you!" Monday I will be sending home a sheet with information about the day and money we will be needing for the kids to go. PTSA is generously donating $10 per student which is a huge help. Please consider attending.
