The Skokie Home Scoop

June 6, 2022

Dear Skokie Community,

The last week of school is upon us. The students have continued to be engaged in learning, and we have enjoyed getting to see numerous projects coming to fruition around the building.

At some point in the past several weeks, the students utilized advisory time to reflect upon their school year and write a letter to their “next year self.” Students were asked to reflect upon what they learned this year about themselves personally and/or as a student and to set a goal for next year. The following prompts were shared with students:

  • How have I grown as a friend?

  • What have I learned about my emotions and managing them?

  • One way I grew in (math/science/LA/SS/exploratories) is…

  • One goal I have for myself in ____ grade is:

Letters were delivered to members of our school SEL Committee, and we will be sure next year’s 6th and 7th grade teachers receive the letters so that the students can open them at the beginning of next school year.

Our staff is working hard to ensure this last week is full of memorable moments for your children. We hope your families enjoy a wonderful summer.

Take care,

Betty Weir and Larry Joynt

School Supplies for 2022-23 School Year

We have heard that some families have already received their box of supplies for next year. Our school supply provider shared that with the supply chain challenges in recent months, they wanted to be sure to get supplies to our families in case there becomes a shortage or delivery delay later on this summer. We realize this is earlier than anticipated to receive supplies for August and we apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for understanding.

One Book, One Campus

All 5th-8th grade students and Skokie/Washburne staff will be receiving a copy of Wishtree by Katherine Applegate for our “One Book, One Campus” initiative. We are hopeful that students enjoy this title over the summer. Students can read independently, or you may choose to make this a read aloud as a family. We look forward to engaging in an all campus activity related to the book upon return to school next year.

Summer is a great time to get lost in a book. Here are some fantastic reading suggestions from the Resource Center. Happy Reading! Also, don't forget to check out the summer reading program at the Winnetka Public Library.

Planning for the 2022-23 School Year

As shared in Dr. Tess's message on Friday, Ms. Betty Weir, Principal of The Skokie School, has accepted the position of Director of Professional Learning for Glencoe Public Schools, effective July 1, 2022. In light of this transition in leadership, it is important to recognize the level of preparation that has already gone into planning for our next school year. Each Spring, our principals spend time articulating information from one grade level to the next, ensuring that the next year’s teachers are prepared to receive a new class of students. At Skokie, this has involved Ms. Weir visiting each of the three elementary schools, spending time in discussion with the 4th Grade Teachers and the Principals (as well as 5th grade teachers for articulation to 6th grade) in order to best plan for classroom placements that are thoughtful and balanced. Regardless of this news, Skokie remains on track with respect to articulation and placement, and Ms. Weir and Mr. Joynt will remain dedicated to that work so it is in place for the incoming principal.

Upcoming Dates

  • Tuesday June 7: Field Day (lunch will be provided for students)
  • Thursday, June 9: Last Day of School (dismissal at 11:50am)
