WHY NEARPOD?
Nearpod is an amazing tool that is available on any web-enabled device. It's a slide presentation on steroids that YOU, the teacher control. With the capability to gather formatively assess your students, move non-linearly through your lesson, track student participation, and by allowing your students to use the tools their drawn to, Nearpod is a must have in any classroom.
Nearpod...
- delivers instruction on the screens that matter most in a 1:1 class, not just the one a teacher has access to,
- transitions instruction to a learning activity, not just a teaching activity,
- creates a safe environment for students because knowledge and insights can be shared anonymously,
- liberates you from the front of the room and allows you to be where the learning goes on (makes for a great classroom management tool too),
- reports help you to
- know the effectiveness of instruction (instead of estimating it by test results)
- do informed differentiation
- reduce the need of more formative testing
- show accurate data on student progress in parent-teacher meetings
- uses existing learning resources (Powerpoints, video's, questions, websites etc) to build engaging learning activities that help you step up the SAMR ladder without you even trying
(This list created by Fons van den Berg - Nearpod Pioneer)
Task 1: Let's Nearpod!
- Go to Nearpod link in the Smore sent to you in the email. Wait for the pin to join.(Alternatively, you can download the Nearpod app to your personal device to use during the PD session.)
- Join the "Getting Started" Nearpod session using the PIN displayed.
- When session has ended the data collected during that lesson will be displayed so that participants are able to see what reports are available and how emailing the results is also an option.
Task 2: Get Signed Up in Nearpod--Sign up through your O365 account
- Participants will now sign up for a free Nearpod account. If they have an existing account they will need to log in.
- Brief walk through of the 5 colored tabs on the left (my library, explore, join, create, reports) and what each of them do.
- Go to the click on the “My Library” tab from their computer. This is where all your lessons you create or add from ones you find will "live".
- Each lesson has two options: 1)Live session-only available option with the free account. This is how to launch your lesson. 2) Student paced is a paid feature which allows students to do Nearpod lessons independently or at home.
- Click on “Explore” at the top left of the page and find at least 3 lessons that you could use in your classroom in the upcoming weeks. (Some lessons cost $$. There is a filter by the search bar at the top that will let you search for FREE lessons only.
- **If time, share what you have found with the group.

Task 3: Launch a Nearpod Lesson
- Partner up with another participant and practice launching one of the lessons you have added to your library with your partner. Briefly run through that less as a teacher while your partner plays the role of student using the pin to join. Switch roles so each has had a turn launching a lesson as a teacher.
- Once this is complete, look over your data and practice emailing it to your partner using the email feature. **Data can be shared with multiple stake holders. Notice that you can Download or "Share" the data. (See picture below.)
Closure Activity: Let's Wrap it up!
- Review the success criteria with participants.
- Discuss how Nearpod addresses the 4 guiding PLC questions.
- Use the comment stream on the bottom of the Smore to state how you think you can best use Nearpod in your classrooms; also, state one roadblock that might keep you from using Nearpod.
- Participants will then take your PD survey.
