Plans for the 2020-2021 year

We hope you have had some time to relax and recharge this summer. With all of the uncertainty that the coming year brings, we would like to provide you with some information on what we know and what we are working on for the year.



State Director

While this process has taken longer than any of us would have expected, we’re pleased to be able to report that we are in the process of conducting interviews with the hope to be able to introduce the next Director in a couple of weeks.


State Officers

With the assistance of the National Office, our State Officers have completed Leverage Training. In addition to the training, they have been working on Virtual Chapter Visits. I hope you will accept their invitation to meet virtually with your chapter members and officers later this month.


SkillsUSA Michigan Advisors’ Council

The SkillsUSA Michigan Advisors Council will meet in September to review and adjust the plans outlined below. Final details for the fall will be sent out after that meeting.


Plans for the Fall

We have been working on a schedule of robust virtual activities this for the fall. These activities are being designed with two primary goals:


  1. engage and inform your members
  2. help teachers with activities that will augment your teaching, whether in-person or remote.


As one CTE Director that I was recently speaking with stated:

“It may be more important this year than any other year to provide CTSO activities for

students to connect with others during these times of remote instruction”.

While we know that we are not able to fully replace the benefits of in-person events, we are working to offer activities that will allow your students to engage with each other and with other members throughout the state.


CTSO’s are one of the Michigan Department of Education’s four major components of a High-Quality State Approved CTE Program:


  1. Academic, Technical and Career Ready Information
  2. Hands-on Laboratory Learning
  3. Work Based Learning
  4. Co-curricular Leadership Opportunities (CTSO)


Below are five key areas that have been identified by the Office of Career and Technical Education Return to School Roadmap – Return to Learn Guidance, to provide Co-Curricular Leadership Opportunities and some of the ways that SkillsUSA Michigan can assist you with planning and delivering that content.


1) Host local and district meetings and elections through virtual platforms


  • State Officers are available to hold virtual chapter visits with each chapter
  • State Officers (and others) will offer a series of virtual presentations to promote membership, chapter activities and leadership.


2) Design leadership development and competitive events for virtual platforms


  • SkillsUSA’s Career Essentials is available to all SkillsUSA Michigan members.
  • A Virtual Leadership Conference will be held for chapter members and officers
  • Virtual leadership content will be added to the State and National Websites
  • We have been talking with other states on what virtual regional competitions may look like


3) Determine which events will be available virtually and how to help students to prepare for them


  • Virtual competition can be available
  • Virtual presentations will be presented on competition strategies
  • A decision will be made by January on whether the State Championships can be held safely in-person or virtually


4) Engage business and community partners in remote leadership and competitive activities


  • SkillsUSA Michigan will be offering a series of panel discussions with business and industry leaders on careers and trends in the industry throughout the year
  • SkillsUSA Michigan will engage with trade programs, schools and colleges to describe their offerings on a virtual platform for our student members


5) Adapt current service projects or fundraisers for the virtual space


  • SkillsUSA Michigan’s virtual meetings will provide resources and ideas on how to conduct virtual and/or limited contact community service projects and activities
  • SkillsUSA Michigan’s virtual meetings will provide resources and ideas on how to conduct virtual and/or limited contact fundraising projects
  • SkillsUSA Michigan is investigating a state-wide limited contact fundraising and engagement activity

Conferences

State Leadership Conference

We will be offering a Virtual Leadership Conference in conjunction with the National Office. They are finalizing the plans, so look for more information after Labor Day.


Regional Competition

Competition is the backbone of the organization because of the way it allows students to demonstrate what they are learning while receiving feedback from the judges on their verbal skills, creative thinking, problem-solving and understanding of the performance indicators for the event. We have been investigating virtual options and will work with the Advisors’ Council to determine the best way to carry out this form of competition.


State Conference

As mentioned earlier, a decision will be made in late January if we can safely hold an in-person conference or if we need to pivot to a virtual conference and competition.
