From the Principal's Desk
Dear Glen Grove Families,
December 20th is right around the corner, our last day of school before a long winter break. The two-week break is a wonderful opportunity for our students to spend quality time with family and enjoy a rest from the structure of school.
Something important to note is that when we come back in January, the New Year will be bringing us a second set of student assessments. Within the window of January 7 thru 10, our students will be taking the winter Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), an assessment designed to measure our students’ growth in reading and math. We will use the results of these tests to help us determine if our students are making adequate growth in these areas and formulate a plan to help students who are not on target reach their goals.
As excitement mounts in anticipation of the upcoming holidays and/or winter break, I would like to pause and thank
- Mrs. Warren and Mrs. Kabat for helping us ring in the season with the lovely sound of children making music at this past week’s holiday concerts, our teachers and Mrs. Kabat for organizing next week’s Student Holiday Sing, a time for our entire school to come together in song, our wonderful PTA volunteers for organizing the upcoming classroom parties, our social worker, Mrs. Salkover, and our amazing PTA for organizing the Holiday Helpers Program, and to our entire community for your contributions - your generosity will make the holidays even more special for so many families and make wishes come true for so many children!
In addition to our emphasis on learning, we are truly fortunate to have so many opportunities to come together as a community in celebrations and, even more importantly, in the service of others.
Last but not least, I would like to wish you a peaceful and safe winter break. I hope you are able to spend time with family and friends in the spirit of love that characterizes the holiday season and that the New Year is happy and healthy for you and yours!
Respectfully,
Helena Vena

Coat Drive
The Library Council is sponsoring a coat drive from December 2 to December 20th. Please send in gently used or new coats. The coats can be any size for kids or adults. The collection box will be by the front doors.
Sad Literary News
Beloved children’s author Andrew Clements passed away on November 29th at the age of 70. His debut novel Frindle won numerous book awards and eventually sold 8.3 million copies worldwide. He wrote over 80 books for young people. It was said that he had enormous respect for his audience. Evident from his many children choice awards, he will be greatly missed.
Set a Reading Goal
Over the winter vacation the Library Council is encouraging everyone to set a personal reading goal. When setting a goal it is important to determine what the reader wants to focus on like stamina, fluency, or comprehension. The goal should be realistic and measurable in order for it to be achieved. Let's all take time to focus on reading!
Overdue Notices
The Glen Grove School Library emails overdue notices to parents once a month to let them know their children have books that need to be returned or renewed. Students receive overdue notices once a day. If a book is missing and can not be located, we ask that parents pay for it by cash or check made out to Glen Grove School. If the book is found within the school year, we will refund your money.
Are you interested in volunteering in the library?
We are always looking for people to help shelve books, organize the Celebrating With Books program, decorate the window displays and other special activities. There is no experience necessary to volunteer. We will teach you all you need to know to help in the library. Volunteer once a week or once a month, it’s up to you! We welcome any and all the help that fits your schedule. If you are interested, please contact Lisa Funke, the librarian at lfunke@glenview34.org or call the school at 998-5030.

Spelling Bee Review and 5Essentials Parent Survey
For intermediate and middle schools:
Spelling Bee Review
Over the last few years, the District has been reviewing the administration of the school and District spelling bees. As we began to refine and enhance our curriculum and instruction in the area of literacy, it became clear that the format of the spelling bee does not align with how we support and promote spelling and throughout the District. Through the workshop model, students have authentic and exciting learning experiences, and spelling is an integral and embedded part of that learning.
For all:
5Essentials Parent Survey - Give Your Input About Our School!
The 5Essentials survey is given to parents of all students throughout the state of Illinois. Your participation allows us to gain information to make our schools the best they can be our students. The Survey is administered for the Illinois State Board of Education by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago.
Participation in this survey is a factor in the ranking of our school on the Illinois Report Card, so we are hoping that EVERY parent will give their input -- including you!
Outdoor Recess Procedures
Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F.
We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure.
From the Nurse's Office
Students requiring any medications during school hours must file a medication form with the health office. This form requires a physician’s signature as well as a parent’s signature. This form can be found under the Parents Tab on the district website in the health and wellness file. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-the-counter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, Cough Drops, etc.
Just a reminder....if your child is out sick with a fever or vomiting please make sure they do not return to school until they are fever free or symptom free for 24 hours.
If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.
All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:55 a.m. at (847) 657-2394! The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.
Parent Visits and Our Security System
We welcome any parents who would like to visit our school and we ask that you:
- Please call your child’s teacher to arrange an appointment if you want to visit a classroom.
- All visitors (including parents) will be asked to present valid state issued identication (drivers license or state i.d.) that will be entered into the system before gaining access to the school beyond the main office.
