Message from the Superintendent
As we head into a holiday weekend -- one that will surely look very different this year -- the LOSD team continues to work tirelessly on developing plans for reopening schools during the pandemic.
Your voice matters, and we thank you for your input as we plan. Teams of administrators, nurses, teachers and staff are working diligently and providing input as we unpack the many components of the Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidance from Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and Oregon Health Authority (OHA).
We will be sharing the developing framework soon. In the meantime, please keep reading for more information and answers to your questions below.
Happy Independence Day
Roadmap to Reopening FAQ
Thank you for your continued engagement on our proposed plans. We have answered questions and concerns shared in the surveys in an Roadmap for Reopening FAQ, which is posted on our website. The FAQ addresses more than 40 questions ranging from schedule considerations and facility usage to budget and decision-making.
If after reading the FAQ you have additional questions, please email the LOSD Director of Communications at mary.kay.larson@loswego.k12.or.us. We will continue to update the FAQ with more information.
Middle and High School Survey Feedback
More than 2,100 people responded to our last survey about our middle and high school proposals. More than 85 percent of family respondents, and 70 percent of teachers and staff respondents, said they prefer the blended approach for middle and high schools, and approximately 15 percent of families and 30 percent of teachers and staff prefer online-only school.
Regardless of schedule preferences, many had questions and expressed concerns about safety, wellbeing and effectiveness, which we are addressing. We heard feedback in the surveys, and are looking at different scheduling possibilities.
In addition to our staff and family feedback, ODE has advised that our initial proposal for middle and high school cohorts are considered too large. We are reworking our plans, and will be sharing an updated proposal with reduced cohort sizes in the next couple of weeks. Ultimately, our blueprint for reopening schools must be approved by Clackamas County health authorities and ODE before we may welcome staff and students back to school this coming school year.
Recreational Facilities Open Monday
All outside facilities on school campuses, including fields, tracks, and courts, will open for school-related and individual recreational activities on Monday, July 6. Due to capacity constraints, campus use will be limited to students and authorized staff during school-related activities.
When Clackamas County enters phase 2, school playground equipment may be used at your own risk as the equipment will not be cleaned outside of school use. Also, the district indoor pool may open for lap swimming. We will share more about the district indoor pool opening and rules when we are certain of its opening.
Lake Grove Swim Park Limits Hours
To help ensure everyone has access to the Lake Grove Swim Park while we have a 50 person limit, we have implemented a two hour time limit. Following are the procedures to swim park usage:
- Swim park patrons will check in at the check in booth
- Patrons will fill out a quick card giving the following information: name of one person from the group; number of people in the group; check in time; and check out time
- Once the time limit is up, park patrons need to leave if the park is at capacity, or if the park is not at capacity, they need to go to the check in counter and can get a new card for 2 more hours
- Park employees will do periodic checks to help ensure everyone is following the time limit rules
For more information about the new swim park rules, please visit the losdschools.org.
#MaskUp
In her recent news conference, Oregon Governor Kate Brown said she would be compelled to close down the state again if Oregon's Covid-19 case numbers keep increasing. That means we are at risk of not opening in-person school in the fall. For your health and the safety of others, please maintain distance, wash hands, stay home when feeling sick, and wear a mask. We really want to be able to welcome staff and students back to school in the fall.
Water Safety Reminder
Crowds of more than 100 children are gathering at Roehr Park, next to Foothills Park, along the Willamette River. In addition to drug and alcohol use, many are jumping off the dolphins/barrels into the Willamette River. Running rivers can be extremely dangerous for jumping because large objects are often moving below the surface. Also, because of severe flooding in the 1990s, the structures over the Willamette River now are secured with large cables that cross near where jumpers land in the water. Some jumpers have been injured; we are fortunate the injuries haven't been more severe.
Please talk with your children about gathering in large groups and water safety.
Verify Student Info Before Returning to School
LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2020-21 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. If you tried earlier, the ParentVUE link is working now. This benefits both families and schools by:
- Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
- Allowing parents to review the health conditions on file at your student's school.
- Enabling distribution of electronic devices covered by the district's Technology Agreement
Grab & Go Meals
Next week's lunch special is "Lakeable."
LO Robotics Camp
For the eleventh summer, LO Robotics is offering its popular "Intro to Robotics" camp in a residential open air classroom which complies with Oregon Health Authority guidelines for COVID-19. The camp introduces the concepts of robotics and computer programming for elementary and middle school students. Campers learn about algorithms, functions, variables, loops and conditionals using Lego Mindstorms and then program a robot to perform simple tasks and compete in challenges. For more information, visit www.lorobotics.org/camps.html or email summercamp@lorobotics.org.
Summer Counseling Supports for Students
While school is out for the summer, the LOSD Wellness Team of counselors, social workers and psychologists has prepared an updated list of resources for students and families. Please click here for resources for mental health and social-emotional supports.
If your concern is urgent, call the 24-7 Clackamas County Crisis and Support at 503-655-8585.
Tutoring Resources
Are you looking for someone to tutor your students? Many people, including students, reach out to LOSD offering assistance. Each year LOSD updates its list of approved tutors. Click here to access that list.
Hunger Fighters Continues Expanded Service
Hunger Fighters, located on the Lake Oswego High School campus, is continuing its Saturday pickup from 1-3 p.m. and Wednesday from 4-6 p.m.
Clients who pickup groceries will receive perishable items as well such as produce, bread, dairy or eggs. Hunger Fighters cannot currently provide such items to delivery clients, but it is working towards that goal.
Hunger Fighters has started a delivery program for homebound, immunocompromised and at-risk individuals and families in Lake Oswego. Requests must be submitted by Thursday to receive a delivery of non-perishable groceries on Saturday. Visit www.hungerfightersoregon.org and click the link to submit a request.
Clothing Closet Expands Service
I Love Lake Oswego provides clothing and essential hygiene products to people in need. It has expanded its services to everyone in the community. SafeOregon
Parents who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
