The Discovery of Microbes
These 3 people have made a big difference!
What will I find on this poster?
On this poster you will find information on 3 people who really made a difference in the world of microbes.
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
Leeuwenhoek used samples and measurements to estimate numbers of micro-organisms in units of water.
Some of his discoveries include the discoveries of:
The bacteria
The vacuole (of a cell)
The infusoria
In his lifetime he sent aprox. 560 letters to the Society and various other science institutes, concerning his observations and discoveries.
He died from a rare disease, which now-a-days is called Van Leeuwenhoek's Disease.
Edward Jenner
Edward Jenner was an English Physician and Scientist. He was the pioneer of the Smallpox Vaccine. He was also known as 'The Farther of Immunology'.
Jenner's work on vaccination prevented him from continuing his ordinary medical practise. He was supported by his colleagues and the King in his work and was granted £10000 for his work on vaccination. He was later granted £20000 for his continuing work on micro-biology.
Jenner's work on vaccination may someday lead to the cure of Arthritis or Aids.
Alexander Fleming
After WW1 Fleming started searching for anti-bacterial agents, having witnessed the death of many soldiers due to infected wounds. He went on to explain that antiseptics were killing more soldiers than infection itself.
