Avalanches typically form from extreme snowfall. Then mountain has an overload of snow and some snow slips of causing an avalanche. The snow starts out falling slow then gains speed and can go up to 80 miles per hour! Some avalanches can be triggered by a person. Avalanches can cause massive disaster if lots of people are on the mountain.

This avalanche was on the biggest mountain on earth, Mount Everest.

After an avalanche the snow looks very smooth because the snow slid down the mountain.
