Welcome New Staff!!
Principals
Corbett Middle School: Brian Lutes
My name is Brian Lutes. I have been teaching in the Corbett School District for 20 years. I began my career as a 5th/6th-grade teacher and then moved to the middle school level. One of my favorite things about being a teacher in Corbett has been being part of a community that deeply cares about its children. I have done some coaching along the way as the head middle school football and track coach. Being a teacher for 20 years has been a wonderful and challenging experience. However, it is time to start a new chapter and challenge. I am looking forward to working with an extremely dedicated and inspiring staff of teachers and administrators as the middle school principal.
Additionally, I am a husband and father. We are a very outdoorsy family that loves to go camping anywhere in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I love to travel. My wife and I recently spent our 15-year anniversary in Ireland, and I just got back from a fishing trip in Alaska. I am also a dog lover. I had two Chihuahuas for 18 years and both passed last year. We have recently adopted a French Bulldog named Louie and are loving having a dog around again.
CAPS: Sara Brounstein
Hello Corbett Community!
Most of the community knows me as Ms. B from the Beehive (K-2 classroom) at CAPS. The Ms. B part will stay the same, but my role has evolved and I am now the intervention teacher and principal at CAPS. My hope is to continue to work closely with our teachers, staff, and community to help provide our students with the best educational experience possible. Please feel free to email, call, or visit me anytime!

Corbett Grade School
Claire Kennedy
Please welcome Claire Kennedy to Corbett Grade School! Mrs. Kennedy will be one of our 6th grade teachers for the 2023-24 school year. Mrs. Kennedy is a Corbett High School graduate and a former student teacher in the grade school. Some of you also might recognize Mrs. Kennedy as a middle school volleyball and track coach.
Outside of teaching, Mrs. Kennedy loves sports, reading, eating and making delicious food, and spending time with friends and family. She lives in Gresham with her husband and they enjoy traveling and camping with friends and family.
Mrs. Kennedy has had a lot of changes in her life this summer. In addition to a new teaching position at Corbett Grade School, Mrs. Kennedy and her husband just purchased a new house and have welcomed their first child into their family this summer.
CAPS
Sam Wallace
I am so excited to join the staff of CAPS as a K-2 teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. For the past two years, I‘ve taught English and Health at Corbett High School. Before that, I taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Corbett Grade School for seven years. I began teaching 5th grade in the David Douglas School District in 2004 and stayed for a decade before coming to Corbett. I love teaching, working with students and their families, and fostering a strong classroom community.
My children, Elliot (5 and entering kindergarten) and Esme (7 and entering second grade) go to school in Portland, where we live. My wife, Marleen, used to work in Corbett at the grade school and then as the English Language Development teacher. She currently works in Sherwood as the Assistant Superintendent. We have a fifteen year old Shar Pei/Lab mix named Monty who is as cuddly as he is gaseous. We love playing tennis, basketball, travelling, skiing, cooking, and hanging out with our extended family throughout Oregon and California.
Katelyn White
Hello CAPS families! I am excited to begin the school year joining the CAPS program on the 6th-8th team. Some of you saw me frequently last year during Cross Country and Track, some of you may remember me from times subbing in the Beehive during your earlier days at CAPS, and some of you I will be meeting for the first time. I know that transitions like switching to a new teacher can sometimes be a trying experience for students, but I hope to be a positive addition to the classroom community you have helped to build, as well as adding into it our own class flavor.
I am an outdoorsy mother of three boys–a catcher of garter snakes, and rescuer of spiders. My to-be-read piles of books at home is rapidly reaching dangerous heights, and I am currently in an Agatha Christie kick. I have deeply held opinions about crepes and ramen, a big love for Disneyland, and a tendency to bust into Broadway show tunes. When I was a sixth grader, I considered myself to be a budding Egyptologist, so I am particularly excited about the Ancient Civilizations unit we get to dive into this year. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your summer, and look forward to seeing you soon!
Samantha Sanchez
Corbett Middle School
Ashlee Ray
My name is Ashlee Ray. I am the new Middle School teacher at CMS. Last year, I served in a dual role, as both the CMS Intervention Specialist and 8th grade History teacher at the 8/9 academy. I am so excited to be joining the Middle School staff this year!
I am a mother to 3 awesome boys and I am passionate about art! In my spare time, I am a mixed media artist and I enjoy painting murals and large panel pieces. I also love traveling, Los Angeles Dodger baseball, the ocean, and camping!
I love teaching because I truly enjoy working with students. My decision to enter education is a direct result of having wonderful teachers growing up, and education opening the door for growth and creativity for me as a child. What I love about Corbett is the care and attention that each of my own children have received. My boys are thriving in so many ways, and I attribute this directly to our amazing district. I am really looking forward to getting to know our CMS students and families this school year!

Under Oregon's expanded income guidelines, a family of four that makes $90,000 qualifies for free/reduced lunch. All income guidelines can be found here. This is a confidential program. The only people who will know your child is receiving benefits are the nutrition staff. Children receiving free meals are not identified to other students or adults. The benefits go beyond school meals. Other cost-savings opportunities are available to students and families who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, such as reduced participation fees for athletics and activities, plus low-cost high-speed Internet or mobile hot spots, and much more. Apply now! Families must apply each school year.

Questions?
Contact Athletic Director: Angela Davis adavis@corbett.k12.or.usCorbett’s Cross Country team is gearing up for another great season
The team this year will be led by a strong core of returning runners including seniors Olivia McGrew, Malena Mayell, Cyrus Kurkinen, Joey Kirnan, Ethan Pinedo, Jesse Gomez, Ellie Dodson and Aiden Harlow.
We’re especially excited to build on the improvements of last year’s runners who collectively set 53 season or personal records. Olivia, Malena and Cyrus all rank in Corbett’s top 4 fastest runners on record and Logan Matias became Corbett’s second fastest 9th grader ever. The future looks very bright.
We have two more preseason practices on Monday (August 7th) and Wednesday (August 9th) from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Donald Robertson City Park next to McMenamins Edgefield.
The first official day of the season is Monday, August 14th. We’ll meet at the bleachers on campus and will train from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Our first race will be on August 25th. Our season schedule is available at https://www.athletic.net/team/75/cross-country/2023.

Catherine Arndt: 2nd/3rd grade teacher
Corbett's 2nd/3rd grade teacher, Catherine Arndt is "homegrown!" Born in Portland, Oregon and adopted at birth, Catherine Arndt lived in Canby until age two. She joined a sister, seven years older, also adopted at birth. Catherine moved to Corbett with her mom and sister when her parents divorced. Catherine's dad later remarried and she has a half-brother who is four years younger. Catherine is pleased to say that she attended school in Corbett from kindergarten through her senior year, graduating in 2010. As a youngster, Catherine was always busy! Growing up on property, she also played both school and club sports, with her mom being one of her biggest fans and strongest supporters. Catherine played basketball, volleyball and softball, but says that volleyball was always her favorite. During Catherine's senior year, she blew out her knee and then never played volleyball again. But, she came back to coach volleyball at Corbett in 2015-16, which she loved! After graduation, Catherine attended Mt. Hood Community College for one year. She then moved to Oklahoma for a relationship and found work as a corrections officer. When the relationship did not work out, she stayed in Oklahoma and met her current husband through mutual friends. Zac Arndt was in the Army when they met, and after dating a short time, got married in Arkansas. In 2014, Zac had completed his time in the Army, so they moved to Oregon. Soon after moving, Catherine became pregnant. Easton was born at 27 weeks and was in the hospital for 77 days due to his birth weight being just 1.7 pounds. At this time they were living with Catherine's mom and Catherine became Easton's full-time caregiver when he came home from the hospital. When Easton was two years old, Catherine went back to school and earned her bachelor's degree in social work from Portland State University. During her schooling, Catherine also worked as an educational assistant at the Corbett Grade School and worked as an intern as a social worker in the Reynolds School District. Catherine graduated in 2020, near the start of the pandemic. Catherine then began working for the Corbett School District, willing and able to help out in any capacity needed. She ended up running the online learning program for several students who did not return to the classroom in 2021. In the fall of 2022, she was hired as a temporary substitute to cover for a teacher on leave, and it turned into a permanent position. Catherine is now enjoying having her own classroom, teaching both 2nd and 3rd graders. Catherine has a passion for reading, and loves to share that passion with her students. Currently, Catherine is attending Western Governor's University online to earn her master's degree in elementary education. Her initial desire to go into the field of social work changed once she got into a classroom setting. She is thrilled to have found a career that brings so much joy and allows her to be in the community that she herself was raised in. Easton is now in the 3rd grade at Corbett and Zac works for Tillamook County Creamery, Assoc., working from home in Corbett. As a family, they love living in Corbett with all of the nature that it offers. They also love to golf, and it is a family affair, with all three enjoying the activity! They also enjoy camping and being active outdoors.

Summer Food Service Program Offers Free Nutritious Meals to Combat Childhood Hunger
Families can look up meal locations in their area by calling 2-1-1, or texting “Food” or “Comida” to 304-304 or by visiting Summer Food Oregon.
(Salem, OR) – The Oregon Department of Education is encouraging Oregon families to take two steps this summer to help combat childhood hunger:
- Find a summer meals site.
- Spread the word about summer meals sites.
When schools let out for the summer, thousands of Oregon children lose access to breakfast, lunch, and afterschool meals, available during the regular school year. Many children and families rely on these school meals to supplement what is available at home.
The Summer Food Service Program helps fill this gap by providing free nutritious meals to children and teens over the summer months. Free meals and enrichment activities are offered at more than 650 locations throughout the state including many schools, parks, and other non-profit organizations.
Meals are available to any child 18 and under without regard to race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), age or disability.
Finding Meal Sites
There are more than 650 summer meal sites in Oregon alone.
Families can look up meal locations in their area by:
- Calling 2-1-1
- Texting “Food” or “Comida” to 304-304
- Visiting Summer Food Oregon
Spread The Word
The Oregon Department of Education invites community partners, school districts, and all Oregonians to help spread the word about the free summer meals to families in your area. A sample Tweet and Facebook post are provided below for those interested in promoting summer meals and reducing childhood hunger this summer.
Sample Tweets:
#SFSP can fill bellies and minds! For more info visit Summer Food Oregon #SummerMealsOR
Find #FoodFriendsandFun! To find a #SFSP meal site by you visit Summer Food Oregon! #SummerMealsOR
Sample Facebook post:
Children need good nutrition all year long. When school is out during the summer months, many children no longer have access to even one nutritious meal each day. The Summer Food Service Program helps to fill the gap. To find a site, call 2-1-1, text “Food” or “Comida” to 304-304, or visit Summer Food Oregon.
