Weekly Principal's Message
Hello Duniway School Community!
January is flying by! We had another stellar week at Duniway. Our PTA meeting was fantastic as we welcomed Mom's Demand Action for a gun safety presentation. At the PTA meeting, I shared the exciting news that PPS has approved our request for a new playground project! The approval is the first stage of the process, which should take anywhere from 6 months to a year to complete. We are in the vendor selection phase of this project, getting bids for the equipment, and are working with 3 PPS partners. After we pick a company, we will begin the refinement process as we customize the structure for the space. During this project phase, we will turn to you, the community, for input. Stay tuned for updates and an invitation to attend a PTA meeting, most likely in the spring, where you will have an opportunity to provide this input.
Today we had our first assembly of the school year. I have compiled a short video below of the highlights. Check it out! We had a great time: we reviewed some schoolwide practices and talked about our value of the month ("connected"). I read Amanda Gorman and Loren Long's "Change Sings" to students, a great book from the US Youth Poet Laureate. Next, Mr. Donahoe had students demonstrate cup stacking. Next, the kindergarten sang a song they'd practice this Fall and were interrupted three times by applause from the student audience. Lastly, Ms. Adams contextualized and led us all through the important Civil Rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" in connection with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For many of us, it was our first-ever assembly at Duniway and was truly memorable.
It was a great week, and I always appreciate the volunteers, community connections, and support you provide that make our community vibrant and an incredible place for students to learn and grow. Thank you.
From the Principal's Desk:
Choir - Thank you, Ms. Adams, for our fantastic first week of Duniway Choir! We had over 60 students show up to participate. We are excited to offer this to students and have posted a volunteer opportunity on Konstella for parents to volunteer to support. We will have a spring performance for this group. If you haven't already, please review the dropoff procedure (included below) to make things as smooth as possible. Thank you for your cooperation and participation.
MAP and iReady Testing - this month, we are working with students to have them complete both MAPS testing (2-5) and iReady math diagnostic testing (K-5.) These diagnostics are important mid-year measures that help to inform teachers of student progress and to provide data by which teachers can plan out future instruction. Students are doing a terrific job engaging with these computer-based assessments. So be sure to give kiddos a high-five, pat on the back, or other words of encouragement.
Thank you, and please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I am always happy to connect.
To ensure the safety of our students and staff, we'd like to remind families about traffic patterns for morning dropoff and afternoon pickup.
If driving by car, please drop off your student on SE Lambert going West Bound.
See map below.
Students attending Choir on Tuesday and Thursday mornings must be dropped off by 8:00. Drivers should remember to drop off on SE Lambert - the traffic has been very backed up on SE Reed College Place, causing delays for staff reporting to work in the morning. Choir students will enter through the South Entrance in front of the school - the entrance closest to Ms. Calvillo's room.
Pedestrians: please remind your students to walk carefully through intersections and look both ways.
Drivers: please maintain safe speeds through our School Zone and remember that pedestrians have the right-of-way at intersections.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Change of Clothes 👕🩲🧦👖
During this rainy season, we ask that you pack a ziplock bag with a change of clothes for your student to leave at school. Bags should include clean socks, pants, top, and undergarments, and be labeled with your child's name and the name of their teacher written on the ziplock bag.
