A lot of this book takes place in Arizona, where the Wanderer is desperately looking for clues of Melanie's life before. She gives the Wanderer many directions on where to find possible evidence, but even after following Melanie's many directions to an old cabin in the woods, nothing seems to be found. Yet.
Melanie once had a life before her soul was put into the Wanderer's body. She had a brother, Jamie, and a "boyfriend" named Jared. She loved them so much, but one day everything had to change. When Melanie jumped off that building, she didn't know what would happen. Well, she did know one thing. Her soul would be put into a new body. This picture shows what the souls in the book would look like when they weren't in someone's body.

The mood in this book is always tense because of all the dangers imposed on the Wanderer. She and Melanie are both always worrying about if she will get caught or if she will get killed. Setting's Effect on the Characters...
The setting in this book very highly affects the main character. She always feels like someone is going to pop out around her and kill her, which makes her worried all the time. Based on what is almost always going on around her, she has to make strong decisions on what she is going to do. The setting really affects what kind of choices the Wanderer has to make to keep her and Melanie safe.
Setting's Effect on the Plot...
Lots of things that happen in the book depend on the fact that it is taking place in the future. Since they are in the future, they can take dead people’s souls and put them in other people’s bodies, which is what happened between the Wanderer and Melanie.
The Wanderer is also in danger from everyone who might be around her because they might kill her. Since "regular" people are frightened of people like the Wanderer, she needs to watch he back every second to make sure no one is trying to kill her.
