N-CHS competes at State Envirothon
April 24th and 25th, 2015
Envirothon team travels to Burlington, NC!
“The Nature Lovers” Envirothon team competed at the North Carolina State Envirothon on Friday and Saturday, April 24th and 25th, 2015 at Cedarock Park in Burlington, NC. On Friday, students attended interactive presentations lead by NC State Park Rangers, scientists from surrounding universities, and other environmental agency representatives. Envirothon students learned about various topics within the following subject areas: Forestry, Aquatics, Soils, Wildlife, and Current Environmental Issues. Friday’s events also consisted of students presenting an oral presentation based upon a given environmental problem that the students had not seen prior to the competition. They were given an hour to prepare their solution to the problem, create an information poster for their presentation, and practice their presentation. The oral presentation audience consisted of environmental agency representatives, volunteers, and various instructors of environmental science. Presentations were scored based on preparation, application of data, quality of presentation, and various required elements pertaining to environmental issues.
On Saturday, students completed their subject tests in a station format. It was a rainy and chilly day, but all the students displayed great sportsmanship and had a great time. Unfortunately, our team did not score in the top ten, but these students should be congratulated for competing against 47 other high school teams from across the state of North Carolina. A big thank you goes to Mrs. Julia Styers, Principal at South Newton Elementary School, for chaperoning and transporting us to the competition! “The Nature Lovers” team qualified for competition in the State Envirothon by placing 6th place at the Northwest Regional Envirothon on March 26th, 2015.
