Castle Hayne Celebrates Exceeding Growth!

The NC Department of Public Instruction released school letter grades based on testing proficiency as well as Growth Indicators measured by EVAAS. Castle Hayne exceeded academic growth! Castle Hayne Elementary School is one of 6 schools in the county that exceeded growth and the only school in the county that went from not meeting growth to exceeding growth. Way to go Hurricanes!!!

Daily Reminders

1) What time does school start?

We begin instruction at 7:50 am directly after the Pledge of Allegiance, the S.T.O.R.M Skills, and any quick morning announcements. We allow students to enter the building at 7:20 am and the late bell will ring at 7:50 am. Students should go directly to the cafeteria if they intend to eat breakfast prior to class. Students should arrive at school by 7:40 am to ensure they have enough time to get through the line for breakfast.

2) What is the procedure for checking my child out for an appointment?

Everyone who enters the building must ring the "doorbell" on the wall at the front door. Let Ms. Kristin know that you are at school to check your child out, and the lock will open for you to enter and come to the lobby. Once you are in the lobby, your ID will be checked and you will sign your child out on the blue card, your child will be called down to the office to meet you. You must bring your ID each time you check out a student even if we know you. This policy is to keep your child safe. Front office staff are finalizing the daily transportation information at 2:00 pm; so, there are no check-outs after 2:00 pm.

3) What is the procedure for checking my child into school?

School starts daily at 7:50 am. Please make sure your child is in the building prior to 7:50 AM. If you arrive after the 7:50 bell, someone needs to accompany the child into the building and sign them in at the computer that is located in the lobby. Please provide any medical notes upon arrival. Breakfast is provided prior to 7:50 but we cannot guarantee availability once the school day has started.

4) What should I do if I need to make an afternoon transportation change for my child?

**All transportation changes must be made in writing. Should you need to change the way your child is getting home in the afternoon, please send a note to your child's teacher or email the teacher to let them know that there is a change for that day. Please call the front office so that we can make sure the teacher sees the email.

All transportation changes must be received by 1:00PM.

The School Improvement Plan can be found in NC Star. For further information regarding our current School Improvement Plan go to https://castlehayne.nhcs.net/.

In The Classroom

The teachers at Castle Hayne will work with students and their families to support students’ success in reading and math. Some of our key connections with families will be:

  • Send home materials for parents to assist their children with current math concepts.

  • Send new words to families each week with information on how to connect learning to real world context.

  • Creating opportunities for families to learn more about reading and math strategies.

  • Update our class webpage with current links to family-friendly websites for building vocabulary

At Home

The home and school connection is vital to our students’ success in school. Here are some ideas about how families can support students. Families may have other ideas to add to this list:

  • Read the class newsletter each week.

  • Read nightly with my child and talk about how the story connects with things my child has experienced.

  • Look for the class newsletter and check out the school website regularly for new ideas to support our child.

  • Play games to review classroom skills.

  • Celebrate my child’s success

Events we have to help build partnerships with our families:

  • Open House

  • Curriculum Night

  • Family Home Projects

  • Parent/Teacher Conferences

  • Field Trips

  • Fun Days

  • School Wide Activities throughout the year

Family & School Together

This Family-School Compact for Achievement was created to support our students, their families, and our school community. Teachers suggested home learning strategies, parents added ideas to make them more specific, and students told us what would help them learn. Meetings will be held each year to review the compact and make changes based on student needs.

If you would like to volunteer at our school, please contact your child’s teacher or the front office at 910-602-4970.

Students

Castle Hayne Elementary students can join the efforts of their parents and teachers to develop ideas about how they can succeed in school and unlock their potential to excel in reading and math. Here are some ideas of how students can assist in making connections between learning at home and at school:

  • Set goals for themselves to learn new words and read every day.

  • Think up new words to put on the family “word wall.”

  • Keep a log of the games they play at home to practice new vocabulary words and math.

  • Help make the grocery list and estimate how much the food will cost.

  • Read and tell their family about what they read.
