Agnolo Bronzino

Renaissance Artist

Bronzino's Life

Agnolo Bronzino was born November 17, 1503 in Monticelli, Italy with the name Angelo di Cosimo. He was trained as a painter, first by Raffaellino del Garbo who taught him the art of color, and later by Pontormo in Florence whose paintings he often assisted in creating. Bronzino spent most of his life in Florence, Italy where he later became a respected member of society as court artist to Cosimo de' Medici ,the Duke of Florence. As the Medici family was Agnolo Bronzino's patron, he painted many portraits of their family members which all showed Bronzino's realism ideals in their cold backgrounds and realistic faces. Another ideal commonly used by Bronzino is humanism which you can see in the regal and high society people posing as the subject in his paintings.

Eleonora of Toledo with Son Giovanni

Eleonora of Toledo with Son Giovanni is an oil painting created from 1544 - 1555, currently located in Florence, Italy at the Uffizi Gallery. The portrait features Duke Cosimo de Medici's wife, Eleonora, and one of their eleven children, Giovanni. What makes this piece so interesting to me is Eleonora's dress because it is the the most detailed and focused part of the painting, not their faces. The Renaissance ideal most closely linked to this piece is realism because of the large amount of lifelike detail found in Eleonora's dress and their faces. The significance of this painting is that it was the piece that gave Bronzino his job as the Duke's official court painter.
