LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We have many events going on this month and in November. Please take a moment to review the important dates section and mark your calendars. We have a few important events I would like to highlight and one goal we are working on as a school.
Conferences (October 14th, 15th, & 16th)
I believe first quarter conferences are extremely important for you to learn about your child's learning. Please keep the following questions in mind when you meet with your child's teacher.
- What subjects do you believe you are doing well in? Why?
- What subject do you feel you struggle in? Why?
- How do you get help when you do not understand?
- How do you know when you are doing a good job in your classroom?
- Is there anything you would like me to ask your teacher?
Fall Festival (October 25th)
Each year our PTO and teachers host a family event called Fall Festival. We believe it is important to bring families together to help raise funds, rather than ask you to sell something that no one really wants or needs. I hope to see each of you come out to support our Longhorns.
Attendance
I appreciate families who make daily on-time attendance to school a priority in your home. The majority of our students are present and on-time daily. However, we have been in school for about 37 days and we have an average of 17.7 students tardy and 21.7 students absent daily. These numbers seem small. However, when I look at the number of individual students, we have had 160 students tardy one or more times to school, and 240 students absent from school one or more days. When children miss school they miss learning. When children are late they miss learning. Class begins at 8:00 am daily. When a child enters late he/she disrupts the learning of others.
Happy Conferences!

SIGN IN/OUT INFORMATION
If your child arrives at school after 9:00 am, a parent or guardian must sign in the child in the front office. If you need to pick your child up early from school, a parent or guardian must sign him/her out in the front office.
Please call in to excuse absences at 696-8450 or call our Attendance Line 696-4808 (available 24 hours a day). Please leave your child's name, your name, and a brief messages to why your child is absent.
Thank you for understanding!
Every School Day Counts!
The state of Arizona (A.R.S § 15 – 803) states that a student is habitually truant from school when he/she misses 5 school days.
This year students with 5 unverified absences (no one let the office know the reason for the absence) or excessive absences (10% or 18 days) will require a meeting with the principal to create a plan to increase your child’s attendance.
If your child is ill, has a fever, or is vomiting he/she should stay at home to keep from spreading germs to others.

LAGUNA PRIDE RUN
This year our goal is to raise $1000.00 to help support our Holiday Craft Night, P.E. Sports Parties, the Spelling Bee and so much more! If we reach our goal, Ms. Camacho will be dressed in a crazy costume!
Pledges may be made per number of laps the child walks/runs in 20 minutes, or for a given amount. There is no minimum pledge. However, prizes are awarded to each child/sponsored adult who raises $5 or more. Students can collect pledges from family and friends from October 28th - November 7th. Pledge envelopes are due back Thursday, November 7th.
Interested in volunteering the day of the run??? We need assistance marking laps, handing out water and tallying pledge sheets. We would love to have you!

Top Survivor Anne Marie Anderson
Thank you to all the families and students who came to Laguna Survivor Night. We had a blast! There was so much to do and see. We went shopping at Laguna Mart, built car ramps, saved some dinosaurs, made light up circuits, held cup tower races, mixed up some putty, shook creamer until it became ice-cream, created marble runs, formed grape towers, flew paper airplanes, and raced balloons. Whew! Hard to believe we were able to get all that, and more, done in one evening.
Benjamin Padilla Top Survivor and Laguna's very own Dinosaur Saving Champion!
We would like to congratulate two of our top Survivors: Anne Marie Anderson for building the tallest cup tower in three minutes and Benjamin Padilla who built a structure that supported 83 dinosaurs. Way to go Longhorns!
Thinking Putty!
One of our favorite activities of the night was making the softest, most squeezable thinking putty. To make your own putty, you'll need:
1 cup Cornstarch
1/2 cup Lotion (either unscented or scented)
*Optional Food Coloring
Instructions:
Add 1 cup Cornstarch to a bowl, add 1/2 cup lotion into your bowl of Cornstarch.
Mix it with your spoon and then your hands – kneading the dough until smooth.
Optional Add 1-2 drops of color and mix
**if you find your putty is too sticky, add a little more Cornstarch. If you find your putty is a bit too dry, add a small squirt of lotion. This putty should feel soft and smooth. Perfect for molding, stretching, and playing.
Place it in an airtight container for long-term storage.
FALL TITLE 1 MEETING
Our Fall Title 1 Meeting was held on September 12th, at 12:30. The informational meeting included topics such as parent involvement goals, understanding how Reading Lab works, and any input with the school year's compact. This meeting helps our parents know more about Laguna and what it means to be a Title 1 school. We encourage any Reading Lab student to bring their parents. Knowledge is power!
