A Peek at our Week
Writing: This week, writers learned how to make their how-to books better with a catchy introduction. They chose to either say hello with a question, a riddle, or a fun fact. An introduction might sound like this: Do you like pasta? Do you like to make things? If so, you should learn how to make spaghetti! Next week, students will learn how to end their books with a conclusion. They will choose how to say "goodbye" to their readers by giving them a sense of accomplishment, words of encouragement, or by giving them something else to try. An example of a conclusion sounds like this: Now that you know how to make spaghetti, you should learn how to make garlic bread to go with it!
Math:This week, we continued to work with the "make 10" strategy for addition. Students practiced making a friendly 10 and using that 10 fact to help them add. For example, to add 8+6, we can take 2 from the 6 and give it to the 8 to make a friendly 10. So 8+6 is the same as 10+4. We have now completed the first half of the module! After the mid-module assessment, we will switch to subtraction from teen numbers.
Word Study: This week, we worked with r-blends. Students know the "secret" to blends is that there is no secret! We pronounce and hear both sounds in a blend, we just smoosh (or blend) those sounds together! We explored words that begin with r-blends (cr, br, pr, tr, gr, dr, fr). Students should be able to decode and write words that begin with an r-blend and have a short vowel sound, such as grip, track, brick, frog, etc. Next week, we will explore l-blends (bl, gl, cl, fl, pl).

Expected Behavior at GP
Now that we are in the 2nd quarter and students are very familiar with the choices they are expected to make at school, this is a great time to check in with your student to see how things are going! Here are the expectations students are reminded of each day:
Keep hands and feet to self.
Maintain a safe body.
Use kind words.
Sit in a way that respects the space of those around you.
Follow directions right away and do your job.
Keep voice at the expected level (silent when a teacher is teaching or giving directions)
I kindly ask that you remind your child about these expectations and encourage them to make good choices throughout the day. Together, we can help our students learn and grow in a safe and positive environment. Thank you!
