2022 Elk Island Catholic Schools Basket of Blessings Advent Challenge for Lurana Shelter
Lurana Shelter giving
EICS is doing a district wide fundraising campaign during the season of Advent (in partnership with Catholic Social Services). It is called "Baskets of Blessings" and we are fundraising for the Lurana Shelter. Each basket costs $100, and we are challenging our St. Theresa to donate 8 of these baskets. We are collecting money not items. With the support and commitment of our entire learning community, we can easily achieve and surpass this goal!
Please donate through this link: 2022 Elk Island Catholic Schools Basket of Blessings Advent Challenge for Lurana Shelter
Lurana Shelter is a 21 day domestic abuse emergency shelter. The women and children who stay there have nowhere else to go. Their home is unsafe. They may have left their home with only the clothes on their back. When they arrive at Lurana CSS staff will give them a bedroom to stay in. Staff will also provide them with a Basket of Blessings purchased by the students, teachers and parents of Elk Island Catholic School Division. With your donations staff will purchase an adult basket and/or a children’s basket. A typical adult basket may include soap, toothbrushes and other toiletries, feminine hygiene products, make-up, hair brushes/combs and other basics. A typical children’s basket may include necessities like soothers, a rattle or other small toy, a book, a small blanket. All adult and children’s Baskets of Blessings also include a teddy bear. Clients of Lurana often report that they keep this teddy bear their whole lives.

Sergeant George Miok
Program in honor of Sergeant George Miok
George Miok was a former student in our school and was well known for being kind and always willing to lend a helping hand for his school community. George graduated from Archbishop Jordan high school in the class of 2001, and joined the Canadian Armed Forces shortly thereafter. George was also working on a Degree in Education and hoped to one day teach in an EICS school.
His life was cut short however, passing away in January 2010, while serving his country in Afghanistan. George's memory lives on through the George Miok scholarship; a scholarship generously funded by a local business, Jacek Chocolates.
Through a program called "Miok Moments", this scholarship allows St. Theresa to acknowledge and highlight the kindness and service our students display. This year's Miok Moments program kicked off this week.
Like what we did last year, students will be recognized, among other things, for demonstrating kindness, empathy, being helpful, and being of service to others.
This recognition will come in the form of a Miok Moments slip of paper that will be placed in the appropriate grade group bin, thus being entered for a gift card draw prize. Eight $20 Chapters gift cards will be drawn three times between now and Spring Break (before Christmas, mid-February, and before Spring Break). In June, a grand prize draw will be made from all the MIOK moments, and two students will have their name added to the Miok Moments plaque and win a new Chromebook!
Congratulations to the Winners of the December Miok Moments! These Students received a $20.00 gift card to Indigo:

Alberta's Student COMPETENCIES are combinations of attitudes, skills, and knowledge that students develop and apply for successful learning, living and working. Students are the artists, scientists, thinkers, innovators, and leaders of the future. They will be tasked with solving the problems of today while imagining and creating a new tomorrow. The Competencies are critical for equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they will need to successfully navigate their personal journeys in learning, living and working.

Parent Societies
Parent Advisory Council (PAC)
The St. Theresa Parent Advisory Council performs many vital functions for our school community, by helping to facilitate school wide student functions and providing valuable funding to our school via fundraising. Parents involved in the PAC learn about planning and development within the school and are part of the planning process. These roles make their involvement very important to the families, administration and teachers.

Dear Parents:
Welcome to a new year of Catholic education and faith formation for your child!
Each year, in a Catholic school, your child will learn about many aspects of their Catholic faith— including learning about the seven sacraments. In our Archdiocese, preparing children for the celebration of their own sacraments always occurs in the parish, with the support of the school: • preparing for First Reconciliation, and then First Eucharist, can begin when a child is 7 years of age and in Grade 2 or older
• preparing for Confirmation can begin when a child is about 12 years of age and in Grade 6 or older • special preparation is also available for children of any age who are not yet baptized
Most children attending Catholic schools are ready to receive at the ages shown above, but there is no such thing as too late. Are you seeking for your child to celebrate a sacrament, such as Baptism, First Communion or Confirmation? Are you ready to help them live out their Baptismal promises? Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and Elk Island Catholic Schools are each involved in preparing your child for a Catholic sacrament along with you. It is a group effort, and everyone has a role:
• As a parent, the Church has always held that you are the primary teacher of the faith for your child. You teach them about God; set the example; talk about your own faith; and you bring them to Mass. • The place where the sacraments are celebrated and lived is the Catholic parish. We the people of God in the Church are each part of the Body of Christ. Being in relationship with the parish community (with all its challenges and blessings) is essential for your life of faith and that of your child. The preparation for, and celebration of, the sacraments happens in the parish church. • You must sign your child up for preparation at the parish. The school doesn’t do this part of the process for you. Catholic schools are a special place for children to learn more about Jesus Christ, to practice living in a community of faith, and to develop and deepen a relationship with Christ. We (Catholic parish and Catholic school) are eager to walk beside you and your children during this very special time.
Please call OLPH parish office 780-467-5470, send an email to sacraments@olph.ca or visit www.olph.ca/sacraments to get started or learn more.
As you prepare your child for their sacraments may this also be a special time for you - of deepening your own understanding and of growing in faith for the whole family!
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Jim Corrigan, Pastor
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish

We come together at our Lord’s invitation to worship God, celebrate the sacraments, and deepen our faith. We strive to be thankful, generous and welcoming, and are sent forth to help advance God’s Kingdom on earth by proclaiming the Gospel and serving others.
