TEKS: Metric Measurement of Length
VOCABULARY- DEFINITION AND VISUAL (Anchor charts)
In second grade the metric units of measurements used are: centimeter and meter.
Play the song throughout the unit to get the kiddos excited about measurement and they will have a visual anchor of a centimeter and meter..send the link home as well.
SENTENCE STEMS evident in the classroom..anchor chart, small group (sentence strips, math journals,) The focus is always that students are responding using the sentence stems.
Anchor Charts for Metric Measurement and Time:
Students conduct a school scavenger hunt w/ tech integration: SKITCH, Explain EVERYTHING,ChatterPix
Students measure each other's height in centimeters and record in their math journals.
Where do students start to measure? end?
Students use Skitch to annotate their measurements.
DOINK CREATION: A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE OF THE METRIC MEASUREMENT ACTIVITIES.
This unit is rich in investigations students will experience on their own and in small group.
Real-World Examples: students get to measure and record the length of objects throughout the unit
Big Idea: How long is a meter? How do I know if an object is more than/less than a meter?
Sentence Stems: "The door's height is greater than a meter."
"The length of the frame is less than a meter."
SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES-small group folder
Lesson One Small Group- Measuring in Meters
Lesson Three & Five: Real-World: Measuring in Centimeters
Lesson Four: Comparing Measurements in Centimeters
TASK CARDS STUDENTS WILL USE TO MEASURE IN CENTIMETERS AND METERS.
First Day- BUILDING BACKGROUND..introduce the measuring tools for the unit... ruler (centimeter) and meter stick as well as the vocabulary for the unit.
This MIF unit is well-aligned with our TEKS and can be used for whole and small group measurement experiences.
Introduce the meterstick....
WHOLE GROUP: Lesson One: Measuring in Meters
Allow many student experiences to use a meter stick and measuring tape to measure and record objects around the room and school. Hold them accountable to give their responses using sentence stems.
"The length of the table is less than one meter." "The length of the file cabinet is one meter.' 'The length of the rug is more than one meter."
Great activity we did last year students measure their height in meters and use the sentence stem: I am less than one meter I am greater than one meter.
You can do this activity for meters or centimeters: I am less than/equal to/ greater than a meter......or I am _____centimeters tall.
*sentence strips for the sentence stem:
I am _________ a meter
I am ____centimeters tall.
If you do not have a picture of your students have them draw their face instead!
WHOLE GROUP: Lesson Two: Comparing Lengths in Meters
Ex. Joshua walked 7 meters, Dane walked 4 meters. How many more meters did Joshua walk than Dane?
Sentence Stem: _______ walked _______more _______than_______.
Sentence Stem: The ________ is shorter than the ________ by _________meter(s.)
Whole Group: Lesson Three: Measuring in Centimeters
* many small group investigations
*many opportunities to use sentence stems
Sentence Stem: The ________ is _______ centimeters long.
Whole Group: Lesson Four: Comparing Measurements in Centimeters Explain Everything on "The goal for measure and compare lessons....
I included a quick video on What to look out for and questions to ask for measure and compare...
Scenario: Ms. Poe is 162 centimeters and Ms. Stevens is 15 centimeters taller than Ms. Poe. How tall is Ms. Stevens?
Kenner is 85 centimeters tall. Joshua is 19 centimeters shorter than Kenner. What is the height of Joshua?
Allow the students many opportunities to compare two objects starting from a different point.
WHOLE GROUP: Lesson Five: Use Bar Models to Solve Measurement Problems in Meters: Explain Everything
Explain Everything video: Morales
By this chapter our students are comfortable with number bonds and bar models we will build on that for this lesson.
Good book for students to checkout-have in your class library
I also included a video of the story being read...
Smart Exchange lessons for Metric Measurement of Length:
Smart Exchange Lessons for Time: EDC/Dismissal activity
Smart Exchange Lesson for Area: EDC highlight 1-2 a week/dismissal activity
Update: SELFIE board
Every Day Counts
Continue to use the planning guide with questions to ask for the components..remember to add to those questions and reinforce the sentence stems!
Continue/start to play the money songs as they transition to and from EDC and send the link home...
