Maillet's Kindergarten Newsletter

Week Of March 2nd

Highlights from last week....

This was our first FULL week of school in a while! My apologies for not submitting a newsletter for last week. My husband and I went to Jamaica over February vacation and we had difficulty getting back home, so because of that and trying to play catch up, I was unable to create a newsletter. I am very sorry!

I was worried that my friends would have forgotten a lot of information with the break, but to my surprise, they came back where we left off and were ready to learn! Thank you for continuing their learning over break. Many of my friends talked about how much they read over vacation. Thank you!!!!

Most of my friends can write their first and last name with no assistance or models. We will continue to practice at school, please reinforce this at home as well!

In Reader's Workshop, we focused on looking through the word and sound out the letters that we know. I also introduced "Flippy Dolphin", which is when you come to a tricky word, you can flip the vowel sound. Have them show you some of their strategies at home. They are really doing great! Please keep reading those books that I have been sending home weekly with your child. Also, please practice the new sight words that went home. The more sight words they know, the better readers they will become!

In Math, we completed our second round of MAP testing and started our new unit on number bonds. I will attach a video to help you understand the math concept. We LOVE number bonds!!!

We also had our 100th day party, thank you for being so creative with the items that your child brought in. We had a blast counting them, creating a 100 museum, and eating the goodies at the end. Thank you for your participation!

We learned about Abe Lincoln and George Washington and the meaning of President's Day.

Officer Phil came to talk to us about safety. The children loved watching his magic!

In our Second Step program, we will continue to learn about our own feelings.

Our author of the week was David Shannon. We will read several of his books and discuss the similarities and differences of each of his books. So far, he is our class favorite!
K.OA.1 - Number Bonds (Singapore Math)

A peek at our learning this week....

This week is Dr. Seuss' Birthday and we will be rhyming machines!

We will continue to practice writing our first and last name on our work. Please reinforce this at home as well.

In Reader's Workshop, we will be focusing on looking through the word and sound out the letters that we know and look for "chunks" of words we know. I will also be introducing "chunky monkey", which is when you come to a tricky word, you can look for a chunk or part of the word that you know. We will also be working on building our schema, which is our background knowledge, to help us read. Have them show you some of their strategies at home. They are really doing great! Please keep reading those books that I have been sending home weekly with your child. Also, please practice the new sight words that went home last week. The more sight words they know, the better readers they will become!

In phonics, we will focus on short vowels and digraphs. We will be playing many word play games to help learn these skills. We will also work on rhyming words. Many of our friends are still having trouble with this, please rhyme whenever you can with your child so they can practice hearing and saying rhyming words.

In Math, we will be working on number bonds. This is a concept that we use to break numbers apart and put them together.

In our Second Step program, we will continue to learn about our own feelings.

Our author of the week will be Dr. Seuss. We will read several of his books and discuss the similarities and differences of each of his books.
