Third Grade Program
Windows Art 5
by Eunice Chi
Art is everywhere around us. There are pictures on calendars, paintings in our living rooms, illustrations in books, and so much more. Kids who like art might have special favorites they like to draw, paint, or make. For example, I like drawing cartoon characters, such as Theodore from Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Kung Fu Panda, and drew Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse for my three year old brother. Others may just like drawing people, or animals. Some kids enjoy art more than others and are really good at it too.
There’s a program for those students, called Windows Art. Kids in the program have a chance to expand their artistic abilities. So far in the 2015-2016 school year, the fifth grade Windows Art students have created ink printings, chalk pastel flowers , and word art with yarn and pipe cleaners. The current project is making masks of animals or living creatures. My mask is a panda, and some other creatures students are making are monkeys, lions, spiders, and even a mosquito! Students are using blank masks made out of cardboard, and materials to add details to make it look like our animal. The funny thing is, the blank masks are human faces! It’s going to be a fun challenge to make them look like animals.
When asked, “What is your favorite project so far?” Leizl Carlo liked making the Chalk Pastel Flowers, and so did Wajiha Rizvi.
Windows Art is an exciting opportunity. Good Luck to the 5th graders who submitted a portfolio for Middle School Windows Art!
Book Fair
by Caitlyn Stachel
The Book Fair was held in the media center from Monday, February 29 through Thursday, March 3. This year the book fair was held at the same time as Read Across America. During the week, all media classes were held in the classrooms.
Everyone enjoyed looking at the books and purchasing their favorites. Thank you to the PTO for bringing us this event!
GETTING TO KNOW YOU
This month we will learn more about two amazing A.P. Terhune teachers. Our first teacher is Mrs. Marrone. Her favorite color is blue and her favorite sports are football and golf. Her favorite teams are the Giants and the Yankees. Mrs. Marrone loves to read the James Patterson series. She is an avid participant in Zumba classes. She enjoys seeing her students smile and laugh in her classroom.
Mrs. Marrone likes everything about teaching, but when she grades papers she said it can be overwhelming. She loved reading Babushka’s Doll by Patricia Polacco, to her students because, “It was entertaining and taught a lesson.” She loves to teach Science, and she does not have a least favorite subject to teach. When she was a student her favorite teacher was Miss. Annichiarico. Her husband inspires her. Mrs. Marrone’s words of wisdom to current, past and future students are, “Do the best you can and NEVER give up on your dreams.”
The second teacher we will get to know better is Ms. Bustard. Her favorite color is green and her favorite sport is football (she is an Eagles fan). Did you know that she played lacrosse in high school? She loves the I Survived series as well as books by Kate Dicamillo. She likes to read, cook, and see friends and family in her free time.
Her favorite part about being a teacher is spending her day with her students. Like Mrs. Marrone, Ms. Bustard said grading papers can be overwhelming. Her favorite subject to teach is Math and her least favorite is Spelling. Her first grade teacher, Mrs. Richter, was her favorite teacher in elementary school. Ms. DeMayo (one of our fifth grade teachers) is who inspires Ms. Bustard most. She said, “She is a good role model and a great teacher.” Ms. Bustard’s words of wisdom to all students are, “You can only succeed if you try.”
I hope everyone enjoyed learning a little bit more about these two wonderful teachers, I know I did.
Valentine's Day Snack
by Saanvi Mehta
At A.P.T we have an annual Valentine's Day Snack in the cafeteria. Thanks to our PTO and teachers, on that day we get to participate in fun activities , devour yummy snacks, hang out with friends, and have a great time, On this day, students pass out Valentines and make cool projects. During the snack time students can guess how much candy there is in a jar. Whoever gets the closest gets to keep the jar of sweets! As a snack, everyone chooses vanilla, chocolate, or mixed ice cream. There are many delicious toppings to add including whipped cream, gummy bears, gummy worms, M&M's, chocolate, rainbow sprinkles, and more.
This Valentine's Day I appreciated our Valentine's Day Snack tradition and wondered about other traditions for the holiday. In Japan, women spoil men by buying them gifts like chocolate. In Denmark and Norway, Valentine’s Day wasn’t celebrated until recently. Men secretly send funny little poems or rhyming love notes to women. They provide only a clue about the sender's name. In Finland and Estonia, people celebrate the day more as a happy friends day.
Just for fun: Try to recite these Valentine's Day tongue twisters five times fast!

The Stick With It Reading Incentive Program is sponsored by the New Jersey Devils. The program began on March 1st and ends March 31st. This program encourages students to read. For participating, the students will receive a pencil, bookmark, and certificate of participation.
The top class that reads the most of all participating classes will win a pizza party. The Devils' mascot will be at the pizza party. Reading logs will be due every Friday in March and they require a parent signature . Results will be posted on the bulletin board weekly. This program is for grades K-4.
Liberty Science Center Assembly
by Tanmay Gopinath
On February 11th, visitors from Liberty Science Center came to teach us about electricity and natural gas. Students participated in experiments and volunteered to demonstrate how things work. A student got dressed up in special gear including boots, gloves, and a jacket just like someone who worked on the wires would wear. Even though it looked funny, we learned how the gear protects the workers from getting electrocuted.
Three other students had to smell three different jars and explain what each one smelled like. The instructors taught us to waft instead of sniffing chemicals. Each jar smelled different, and one had no smell at all. (I wonder if that one had oxygen in it or nothing at all.) We learned that natural gas has no odor, but it is given an odor like rotten eggs so people can smell it if there is a gas leak.
The assembly was great and everyone had fun!
Color Contest
by Saanvi Mehta
Have you ever wondered about the most popular color in our school? The newsletter team and I certainly did. In the last newsletter, Morgan Gaines created a survey where kids, parents, teachers, and others in the A.P.T. community could vote on their favorite color. The votes were tallied and we had a tie. The winners are Blue & Green!
The color blue represents, peace, professionalism, loyalty, reliability, honor, trust, boredom, coldness, winter, and depth. The color green represents, durability, reliability , environmental, luxurious, optimism, well being, nature, calm, relaxed, freshness, harmony, honesty, and Spring.
Be sure to participate in our new recess survey in this issue of the the APT Newsletter!
