Excellence in a Creative Environment for Learning
Teacher Feature: Meet Mrs. Dunham
Mrs. Amanda Dunham teaches Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Intro to Engineering Design. Mrs. Dunham is a Dobyns-Bennett alumni. She received her Bachelors of Science in Biology from MTSU, and then she continued her education at the University of Tennessee with a Master’s in Teacher Education concentrating in Science Education.
When Amanda is not in the classroom, you can find her on the lake either wake boarding or wake surfing. She also enjoys hiking, running, and reading various teen series novels. Mrs. Dunham also is very proud of her insect collection which led her to discover her love of invertebrate zoology and biology.
Mrs. Dunham is happily married, and has a three-year-old daughter, Emma and a Great Pyrenees, Samson, a Golden Retriever, Max, and a Chihuahua named Chico.
Amanda has worked in many capacities in education and has taught from elementary to adult for the past eight years. Mrs. Dunham believes strongly in her teaching philosophy: She is your teacher and here to help you in any way she can which includes: tutoring, letters of reference, even help with college or job applications. She loves to help answer questions and would rather answer a hundred questions than to watch students sit silently in pain, which is why Amanda is an excellent addition to our DBE tribe.
D-B EXCEL MATE Underwater Robotics Team
D-B EXCEL is in the process of forming an underwater robotics team that will compete in MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) competitions.
The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center’s mission is to use marine technology to inspire and challenge students to learn and creatively apply science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to solving real-world problems in a way that strengthens critical thinking, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Trout in the Classroom
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is an environmental education program in which students:
- raise trout from eggs to fry.
- monitor tank water quality.
- engage in stream habitat study.
- learn to appreciate water resources.
- begin to foster a conservation ethic.
- grow to understand ecosystems.
Our trout eggs are scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday, August 30th. Everyone will be able to observe the trout in the fish tank located in the hallway between STEM and the restrooms.
During the year each teacher tailors the program to fit his or her curricular needs. Therefore, each program is unique. TIC has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, fine arts, and physical education. We will end the year by releasing the trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed. We are excited to expose DBE students to this cross curricular, project-based learning opportunity!
In each state, Trout in the Classroom is funded by a number of generous supporters and made more rich through varied partnerships. We are thankful to the Cherokee Chapter of Trout Unlimited for helping us launch Trout in the Classroom at DBE!
