IB Update:
We celebrated our Exhibition Projects with a wonderful virtual launch on Thursday, June 10th. Our 5th grade teacher team and students along with all our teacher mentors put in many hours of work for this capstone project for the Primary Years Programme in the International Baccalaureate. All students inquired into a central idea and lines of inquiry related to our theme, Humans create change in the world. The inquiries were more varied than we have ever had and included topics such as racism, climate change, human rights, social media, bullying, animal shelters, and more. All students researched their topic to share in informative writing and a video presentation. They also interviewed an expert in their field, worked with our arts specialists to create an arts component related to their topic, and completed an action project. Here are a few examples of actions that our students took related to their topics. Here is a short overview video of this year’s Exhibition. Congratulations to our 5th graders for their Exhibition projects!
Additional Information:
If you have any questions about our IB program, please reach out to our IB coordinator, Sharon Scott-Gonzalez at sharonscott-gonzalez@vistausd.org
Mrs. B's Update:
This week in 5th grade, we watched a Middle School slide show on what to expect, what will be the same or different. We want our 5th graders to advocate for themselves by being thinkers, communicators, and risk takers to name a few. We also continued to share in the gratitude journal and discuss what we are thankful for.
For Kinder, 3rd and 4th we watched a short video on “Working on our Dreams”! We discussed and brainstormed goals for the summer! We spoke about creative, relationship, health, and academic goals. I encouraged them to READ and even use fun math flash cards, to be sharp on our skills we have learned.
In kindergarten we read “I Am Enough” which helps us reflect on accepting yourself just as you are, special and unique!!

VUSD Social & Emotional Support
Vista Academy's English Learner Program:
Our ELAC committee met last week and discussed the Needs Assessment Survey. Thank you very much for your input. We have made a list of recommendations for next year to assist English Learners.
1. Informational night for Reclassification and Equity before conferences (individual letters with levels given to parents beforehand)
2. Before and after school tutorials
3. Materials for ELs to be sent home in a “practice packet” (books, flashcards, visual dictionaries, games to practice English)
Vista Academy students have art specialty classes in dance, drama and music every week. Research has shown that participation in the arts has many benefits to students now, as well as later on in life. Each week we will feature a Why Art card from ART=OPPORTUNITY. More information and links to the studies on the benefits of the arts can be found on the website.
