ZBTHS Parent Bulletin
From the ZBTHS Principal's Office Vol. 2, Issue 9
Principal's Message 11/15/21
Happy November, everyone!
I want to express my sincere gratitude to all the veterans in our Zion-Benton Community and those across our great nation. This past Thursday, on Veterans Day, we hosted a recognition celebration. Please watch the recording of our D126 Veterans Day Celebration when you have a chance. We were fortunate to have several distinguished guests join us in person and virtually.
Over the next few weeks, we are planning a few school-wide events to provide students with information, skills, and tools to more effectively resolve conflict and make good decisions within our school community. We are making modifications to our school day and will need to take some instructional time in the process. We feel this time is very important to address the disruptions we have experienced in previous months in order to create a more positive learning environment in the future. Our plan includes the following activities:
- Thursday, 11/18/21: School-wide lesson on Conflict Resolution during period 2 (Grades 9-12)
- Tuesday, 11/23/21: Assemblies during 7th period and 8th period (Grades 9-10)
- Wednesday, 12/8/21: Student Wellness Day (Grades 9-12)
In addition to our social-emotional focus, we know that we must ensure all students are prepared academically. If you haven’t had an opportunity to do so, please take time to watch Buzz Around the Hive Episode #5; it provides some insight to the SAT—what it is and how we are preparing our students to succeed on it. The SAT is the college entrance exam in the state of Illinois that is required for all juniors and therefore is the test D126 focuses on to ensure student success on the exam. Although we prepare students every day through their coursework, I am very excited to report that we are finalizing plans to provide free SAT preparation in partnership with Kaplan SAT Prep for junior students during the second semester.
Lastly, I want to remind everyone that we will have Final Exams this semester on Tuesday, December 14; Wednesday, December 15; and Thursday, December 16. Students who are earning an “A” in a class going into the Final Exam will be exempt from taking the Final in that class. The majority of students continue to do well in the classroom, and we want to make sure they all finish strong. However, we also have a number of students that need to commit to these last several weeks of school. To ensure students continue to thrive, I urge parents and guardians to check Skyward Family Access to monitor attendance and grades. Parents and guardians who monitor Skyward and discuss expectations with their children are extremely important to the partnership with the District to ensure student effort and commitment are high. Students can also take advantage of our tutoring and support at ZBTHS that we have throughout the day.
We have five weeks left in Semester 1. As we enter Thanksgiving next week, I want to express my thanks for all our staff, students, families and community for making Zion-Benton a fantastic school. The challenges of returning to school after being forced to make changes due to COVID-19 are far less than the enjoyable experiences, positive changes, and fantastic accomplishments of our students and staff this semester.
Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Pawelczyk
