Don't Miss Out...We invite you to take part in celebrating Family Literacy for the month of November!

We have issued a challenge to children and families in our school community to take time to celebrate family literacy for the month of November.

  • How many of minutes can Pleasant Street children read for the month of November?
  • How many minutes can our students' families read with and apart from their children?
  • How many reading museum projects will we celebrate over this next month?
  • How many families will take trips to the library?
  • How many new books or gently used books will children welcome into their homes?
  • How many minutes will the families of our emerging readers spend time using letter flashcards and/or sight word flashcards to strengthen their child's skills?

Look for the family literacy challenge form that was sent home on Nov. 10th or you can print it from the link below. We will recognize all participants in the family literacy challenge at an all school meeting on December 12th. All participants will also be entered into a random drawing where we will select one grand prize winner who will receive a $100 Walmart gift card and 4 runner up winners who will receive one of 4- $25 Walmart gift cards.

Community Reading Day 2014

We are always so appreciative of the many volunteers who make community reading day such a success throughout our district schools. Pictured below on the left, guest reader and school committee chair Nancy Melbourne with para-specialist Mrs. Theresa Mann working on a craft project following the reading in Mrs. Goldthwaite's kindergarten class. Center-guest reader, Christine Mailloux from Athol Town Hall in Mrs. St. Jean's third grade class and Sergeant Casella of the Athol Police Department in Mrs. Heuer's third grade.

Thank you to the Athol Public Library and the many community readers who made this annual event possible.

Reading Museum Projects - All School Reading Celebrations!

Mrs. Jones' second grade class is leading the way so far on the number of submitted reading museum projects!

Reminder: To submit an entry into the museum, children just need to use their imagination and celebrate something he or she found interesting about a particular book, author, or series that they want to share with others. This could include posters, crafts, book reports, dioramas, and more! Submitted projects will be photographed and shared in our newsletter throughout the month of November.

Entry slips are linked below and also available at the school.

The Wonderful Mrs. Gospodarek!

We are fortunate to have Mrs. G as our English Language Learning Teacher for the district. Mrs. Gospodarek not only works with students who are English language learners but also students who are being raised in bi-lingual or multi-lingual homes. At Pleasant Street we have student families from a number of different nationalities and include those who speak Spanish, Greek, Portuguese, German, Cambodian, Chinese, and a dialect from India.

Are We Ready for Cold Weather??!! It's Time

While the dusting of snow was certainly exciting to many students it may seem like a hard transition to us warm weather fans! We had children who couldn't enjoy being in the snow on Friday as they did not have warm clothes or boots packed with them.

Children need to have a warm jacket and boots (if there is any snow on the ground) along with a hat/ hood, and warm gloves or mittens. If he or she wants to play in the snow- they also need to start bringing snow pants to school. Thank you!
