Learning Updates for this Month
Kindergarten: We recently celebrated 100s day! We are well into 3rd marking period already. Our Kindergartners are working hard every day and learning so many great things. We are still working on learning all of our letter sounds and using those sounds to read 3 letter words (cvc). We started adding blends to our words. In writing we are learning how to write about small moments that happen in our life. In Math, we will be working on counting to 75 by 1s and 100 by 10s! We will also be working with shapes. This is the long time of year for kindergartners, please be sure they continue to go to bed on time and get lots of rest to stay strong in their school year!!! Also remember we are still in the winter months with lots of snow so please be sure they are dressing appropriately to play outside at recess!
First Grade: First graders are continuing to work on reading strategies, reading with fluency, and answering questions about the text to show comprehension of our stories. In writing we are stating our opinions and writing letters to people we know trying to convince them to make changes in our world. We are learning about congruent and non-congruent shapes. We will be using our knowledge of shapes to complete shape puzzles. We will be talking about the attributes of shapes and identifying the attributes that are defining attributes.
Second Grade: Second graders are reading book series that focus on characters. We are noticing patterns in character's actions and why these patterns occur. We are just beginning a new unit in math! We are working on measuring. We will be measuring the length of objects using various tools. This month in number corner our students are solving story problems and depositing money into a "bank". Our opinion writing is coming along great with students adding details to their reasons.
E.L: WIDA testing began on Monday, February 7 and will continue until March 25. A note was sent home to families about the WIDA test. The WIDA test is a federally mandated test that is given to all English Learners (EL students) in our school. This test measures growth in English Language proficiency in the areas of: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Parents, please be sure to encourage your child to do their very best! Here are some other tips you can follow to ensure that your child is ready for testing: -Make sure your child gets enough sleep at night. -Have them eat a healthy breakfast so they are focused while taking the test. -Talk to them about the test so they are comfortable with taking the test.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week in Social Emotional Learning, students be learning about dangerous substances and poisons. They will discuss how to identify unknown substances and why it is important to stay away from them.
Practice these skills at home using the following resources: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd GradeBright Beginnings Playgroup
