Anthony Wayne - Penta FFA
November Update
What happened in October?
The month started off with AFNR 1 and 2 students going out to Swan Creek and collecting water samples for the Student Watershed Watch Data Collection. The chapter then jumped into CDE mode and took members to the D1 Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. Shortly after a number of students went to Toledo Grows, a greenhouse organization in Toledo, to volunteer! Sweetest day came and the chapter members created rose bouquets and delivered them. The courtyard clean-up started to round the month out after school in late October, but the next day the chickens were harvested that the Equine and Vet Science class had been raising for 6 weeks! Finally to finish up the month, the chapter sent 8 members to National Convention!
Fourth General Session | 2019 National FFA Convention & Expo
Congratulations to Jake Zajkowski!
Anthony Wayne-Penta FFA history was made last week at national FFA convention. Jake Zajkowski was the first member from our chapter to earn 1st place in the nation. He placed 1st in plant systems division 3 of the national agriscience fair with his project titled "The Correlation of Hydroponic Growing Mediums, Seed Germination, and the Harvesting Length of Lactuva sativa."
Watershed Research
On Wednesday, October 2nd, the AFNR 1 and 2 students went down to Swan Creek, which runs through the AW campus, and collected water samples. The classes have been studying water quality and then went out and did field research! The classes did the data collection for Toledo Metropolitan Area Council Of Governments, Student Watershed Watch program. When collecting the data they measured the phosphate and other elements in the water as well as performing a test called a turbidity test.
Ian Robinson, Katelyn Otterson, Elayna Sonnenberg and Summer Muhlenkamp measured the phosphate and dissolved oxygen levels of the stream using chemical tests.
D1 Dairy Cattle Judging CDE
From left to right: Lydia Swartz, Tayler Common, and Kate Otterson participated in the district 1 dairy cattle evaluation career development event. At the contest they judged a number of different classes, took a general knowledge test, and surveyed pedigrees. Tayler Common placed 1st in the district! Tayler will be receiving a customized sweatshirt at our banquet in the spring for this honor.
Toledo Grows
On Thursday, October 17th, 2019 the Anthony Wayne FFA Chapter sent 14 members to Toledo GROWs, in the Toledo area. At the facility, the members volunteered their time to weed and care for gardens and flower beds. The members also helped deconstruct a community garden that was no longer in use. The chapter members volunteered at the main facility, along with working at one of the 125 off-site gardens that the organization supports throughout the year. From left to right, those shown are: Alivia Mills, Vesta Miller, Maddy Rea, Claire Hinton (back), Tayler Common, Nick Rupp (back), Megan Burke, and Maddi Follas.
