WHEN and WHY would you cut apart a 100's chart?
(Grab your scissors and crayons!)
The hundreds charts we see and use in our mathematics classrooms are excellent visual resources that offer a wide array of important numerical concepts - sequencing (forwards and backwards), patterning, beginning counting by ones and tens, and more. That said, there are times to use a chart and there are times to use a linear model of that chart - what we refer to as a numeral roll.
WHEN and WHY to cut? When the hundreds chart is used for adding and subtracting with tens and ones, it can easily and likely become a crutch. In other words, when needed to add and subtract, it’s a tool that is no longer promoting mathematical fluency.
Christina Tondevold discusses this here https://youtu.be/MVLYx-z1uz4and offers Graham Fletcher’s thoughts on “flipping” the chart as well.
ELE principals, if you’ve K-2 teachers who’ve attended Title’s “Why Behind the What” numeracy training, then you’ve expertise awaiting at your site, likely with an empty chart or roll already made. ASK them about the Classroom Numeral Roll! Below is a resource for promoting whole class discourse when utilizing that roll.

Clemson not only leads the pack in college football, they also lead the pack with literacy resources. The Reading Recovery Center at Clemson joined forces with the South Carolina Department of Education to build video modules and learning guides on guided reading, phonics, writing, and non-fiction inquiry.
Clemson has recently added a video module to support classroom teachers with struggling readers. In this module, the teachers are analyzing running records and discuss possible next steps for the student.
