REACH Updates, Grade 3
Grade 3 STEM: Building Basics Foam Block Tower Challenge
In this Type 1 REACH Program, the third grade students are learning about the Engineering Design Process and the forces engineers must consider when building a structure. The students engaged in an engineering challenge to build a foam block structure that is a minimum of 10 inches tall and can withstand an earthquake. Some structures were stronger than others which led to a great discussion about how to make improvements.
REACH Updates, Grade 4
Grade 4 STEM: Building a Shelter
In this Type 1 REACH Program, the fourth grade students are using the Engineering Design Process to solve real-life problems. Their most recent challenge was to build a water-proof shelter in the Amazon Rainforest with only a few materials. The students worked in groups to design and build their shelters. Each shelter was tested with a spray bottle to determine if they could withstand the weather of the Amazon Rainforest.

Authors of the Month
Each month, students' writing is selected to be displayed and showcased in gold frames as part of this special display. This evokes a sense of pride for all authors who are featured here throughout the year.
If your child's work is selected and displayed, you will receive a special letter in the mail inviting you to stop by, read the piece and leave a compliment or love note behind for your author. We hope next time you visit Westmoreland School you check out this beautiful collection of writing and creativity!
Do the Right Thing
Three to four times throughout the school year, our school continues to hold assemblies to recognize students who go out of their way to "Do the Right Thing." Doing the right thing is an exceptional phrase because it can span so many great behaviors. Students could be working extra hard in class every day, be nominated for being extremely kind to a fellow student, or for just going out of their way to be exceptionally helpful. There is no one act that defines "Doing the Right Thing." The simplicity in this phrase is what makes it so great.
This month, we began our assembly by reviewing what "DOING THE RIGHT THING" looks like students who are:
R: Responsible for their actions, words and learning at school
I: Inclusive of all
G: Generous with their belongings and kind words
H: Honest and Helpful
T: Trying their best and never giving up
Our first DTRT Assembly of the year took place on Monday afternoon. Our assembly's theme was the importance of PAYING ATTENTION. This message went beyond paying attention during an academic lesson. This term spans many important behaviors such as... Paying attention to other's feelings, paying attention to the words you use and paying attention to keep you and others safe.
SEVENTEEN recipients were nominated by their teachers! WAY TO GO! A special thank you to the Westmoreland PTO for funding these special DTRT T-shirts which students can add to their spirit wear collection for years to come! This was our first school wide assembly utilizing our new sound and projection system donated by the PTO last spring. It was absolutely AMAZING!

FLASE Dinner Dance Information
Halloween Information
Students are invited to wear their costumes to school on Tuesday, October 31st. We are hoping for sunny skies so students can parade outside in their costumes at 2:15!
Orange cones will line the parade route. We will be exiting the Kindergarten doors near the turtle statue, parading up the sidewalk, past the front doors of our school, across the blacktop, in through the library doors and around for loop 2!
All parents are invited to attend and enjoy the costumes.
We ask that even if the parade ends a few minutes before the end of the school day-that you refrain from signing your child out of school. This leads to massive congestion and chaos in the office right before the dismissal bell rings. Please wait just a few minutes until dismissal at 3pm.
In the event of rain, I will send an email if we need to cancel the parade.
To ensure a safe and productive school day, please adhere to the following guidelines:
Please be sure your childβs costume fits properly and is not too long.
Please leave fake weapons or props that accompany the costume at home, as they may not be appropriate for our school environment.
The costume you wear must allow you to sit, stand or move around the classroom without difficulty.
Costumes should be appropriate and not offensive to others.
We are looking forward to a fun Halloween!
