HISTORY FAIR
Math Update
All 5th graders should complete 30 minutes of Dreambox outside of school each week.
Students are working on Financial Literacy (Topic 16).
Students will also work on correcting their Math Mock Staar from the previous week.
SCIENCE
In Science we are completing our unit on Organisms and Environments. Some topics include: Food Chains, Food Webs, Changes and Interactions in Ecosystems and Life Cycles. Our Unit test will be the 17th of April. As always, the study guide will be due the day prior to the test and will be considered a daily grade. Science STAAR will be May 15th.
Please have your child share their science notebook with you at least once a week so that you can ask them questions about their science lessons. Students can also access the explorations and reading passages we use in class by going on webdesk.pisd.edu and clicking on the Discovery Education Plano app. This app provides a great way to review material that is covered in class.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies:
We have just finished learning about the Constitutional Convention and the
structure of our 3 branches of government. We will now move on to
learning about the Louisiana Purchase (1803) and the Lewis and Clark
Expedition. We will then discuss the War of 1812 and the writing of the
Star Spangled Banner. We will move quickly through the Industrial Revolution
and the Causes of the Civil War before spending time on the Civil War itself.
READING
Language Arts Update:
Students will continue to take notes on their biography until April 15th.
We will add a 2nd and 3rd source for taking notes this Friday 3/29.
Please make sure your child uses the biography, an encyclopedia article,
and another source for note taking during this project. All notes are due
April 11th. After collecting and grading the notes, we will teach your child
how to turn their notes into a research report with a cover page, illustrations,
and bibliography. The final project is due on May 3rd. This allows for a lot
of time to revise and edit the paper.
In addition to the research going on, students are participating in 15 stations
during reading class to review reading TEKS (objectives) we have learned this
year. We will also have several mini-lessons before stations each day to continue
improving our reading skills.
If you feel your child is in need of additional reading practice, please encourage him/her to log into freckle.com. This site has reading skills practice along with articles and questions. There is also spelling practice and math.
It continues to be crucial that your child continue to read daily to help build fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and reading stamina.
