Structured Literacy and Evidence-based Learning at Waipipi.

Over the weekend, there has been a lot of discussion on TV about the state of reading in New Zealand. here at Waipipi, pre-Covid, we have had huge success with students reading at or above curriculum expectations. Our end-of-year results were always in the high 80 percentile.

However, the last three years of Covid have impacted our students learning. The impacts of Covid on students learning has bought about a new urgency into our teaching and students learning.

In Literacy, we have been working within BSL (Better Start to Literacy) which is a nationwide MOE approved and funded structured literacy approach. Mrs Johnson has been earning her micro credentials through Canterbury University in this area. Mrs Johnson has seen very positive results in her students reading confidence and results. As a result of this positive impact, we have incorporated many aspects of "Sounds to Spelling" schoolwide.

Mrs Emma Heaford, as well as teaching at Waipipi School, is also one of three Across Schools Teachers for the local Kahui Ako. Mrs Heaford is facilitating the BSL programme through all the primary schools in Waiuku in her role as Across School's Teacher. She to, is working through Canterbury University to get her micro credentials.

In writing, our school is doing professional development with a new evidence-based programme called "The Writing Revolution." The programme focusses on teaching students how to write using a careful sequence of logical steps beginning at the sentence level using the "Hochman Method." The teachers are incorporating this learning into their teaching of writing across all levels.

Our school uses Maths-No Problem programme in mathematics. This programme is an international, fully researched programme based on the principles of SIngaporean maths. (Singapore consistently tops the international benchmarking studies for maths teaching.)

Maths-No Problem is:

  • A highly effective approach to teaching maths based on research and evidence
  • Builds students’ mathematical fluency without the need for rote learning
  • Introduces new concepts using Bruner’s Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach
  • Pupils learn to think mathematically as opposed to reciting formulas they don’t understand
  • Teaches mental strategies to solve problems such as drawing a bar model
