Roosterz Big Mistake

By: Alex Torres

There was once a farm in a large field that constantly supplied the nearby towns with crops every day. On that farm lived a rooster, and he was the only one out of all of the animals. However, being the only one he thought he was the most important of all the creatures, and this made the other creatures dislike him.

One day the rooster was on his walk when he encountered a hare. There was a branch that had been blown in the way of his rabbit hole. and he spoke…

“Oh rooster, thank GOD you're here,” he said, “There was a gust of wind that had blown a branch from the tree right over my home... Can you help me?”

The rooster has never helped anyone before so why should he start now, he thought. he had something better to do somewhere else. So he quickly came up with and excuse and spoke.

“I'm in a hurry, I don't have the time right now,” he clucked, and rooster slowly walked away.

The rabbit knew he had lied, and he knew he probably would have said that in the first place, it's what he does, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. He then began to remove the branch from the hole which seemed to be watching and waiting for his help.

Along the road was a tree and up in the tree was an owl. The owl cooed in order to get his attention. The rooster looked up at the branch he was perched upon and the owl spoke…

“Without the help of others some things can not be achieved, so what happens if it’s the other way around,” he cooed.

“Why, owl, should I be the one to offer my time in order to help someone other than myself.” he answered, “I shouldn't have to help someone when there is something more enjoyable for me to do elsewhere.” and with that he kept on walking.

He walked for a mere ten minutes more and encountered a sheep that needed his help in order to remove her hooves from the mud.

“Oh rooster, thank GOD you're here,” she exclaimed, “I was walking and began to get lost in my thoughts, and managed to get my hooves lodged in the mud... Can you help?”

The rooster, being rooster, quickly responded with the same excuse used earlier that day…

“I'm in a hurry,” he stuttered, seeming to be unsure of himself. “I have no time to help,” and with that he kept on walking.

Again as the rooster walked he came to another tree and in one of the branches. The owl cooed to get his attention, causing him to look up and he spoke…

“Without the help of others some things can not be achieved, so what happens if it’s the other way around.”

“I shouldn't have to help someone when there is something more enjoyable for me to do elsewhere.” and with that he kept on walking.

Once again along the continuous winding road the rooster had met another animal that had needed his help. This time a dog had hurt his paw and was not able to walk. He barked and then spoke…

“Oh rooster, thank GOD you’re here,” he howled, “I was running back to the farm when I tripped over a stick and hurt my paw… Can you help?”

And once again rooster, being rooster, came up with the best excuse he could come up with…

“I'm in a hurry,” he began, “I just don't have the time right now” and once again he continued to walk.

In a tree above the long road sat the wise owl again waiting for rooster to walk under the branch, so that he may continue with his knowledgeable statement.

As Rooster walked under the tree the owl cooed and the rooster looked up at the large branch which was bigger than an elephants trunk, and the owl spoke once again…

“Without the help of others some things can not be achieved, so what happens if it’s the other way around,” he cooed.

“Why, owl, should I be the one to offer my time in order to help someone other than myself.” he answered, beginning to stroll along again.

Rooster was thinking about his day along the journey and became distracted, and didn't realize the ropes on the ground. He kept walking right into the bundle of rope and his two feet got stuck. He called out for help but no one was there.

Later, he spots three figures walking towards him. He squawked at them asking for their help, however he soon realized that three figures were the animals he had neglected to help before. And as they came to him they also spoke…

“Why should we help you?” the rabbit grumbled.

“Yeah, you never helped us,” the sheep yelled.

“Yeah, we’re in a hurry anyways,” the dog barked sarcastically.

And with that the three animals kept on walking.

A few minutes later the owl had flown in and landed next to the rooster, as lightly as a feather floating down to the dirt. He cooed at him, almost as if saying I told you so, and then said…

“Without your help those animals had had much difficulty in accomplishing their tasks. Now they would have helped you if you had only been kind enough to help, but because you didn't you're left stuck and helpless.”

And that day the rooster learned that in order for people to be nice to you you must be kind to them...
