Hawk Happenings: Oct. 11th

Holy Rosary Regional School/Juan Diego Academy Community

Message from the Principal - Oct. 11, 2017

Happy Wednesday!

Progress Reports are going home today in the Communication Envelopes. As you may already know, we use the Standards Based Grading System at Holy Rosary. The purpose of this is to have more detailed information for the report cards, while also measuring ongoing academic progress of children in specific standard areas. Children will receive a number for their current progress in the subject areas:

1 - Lacking adequate progress

2 - Progressing toward standard

3 - Meeting standard

4 - Exceeding standard

It is very common for your child to receive 1s and 2s in the first trimester, with very few (if any) 3s. As they progress throughout the year and begin to master the standards, they should be earning more 3s. 4s are very rare, as it indicates that the student has not only mastered the standard, but they have exceeded the expectations of mastery. If you have any questions or concerns about the Progress Report or how your child is doing at any point throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher. In order for children to succeed, it has to be a 3 part effort: the child, the parent, and the teacher.

I also want to let you know that I will be having surgery next Thursday, October 19th. I begin my medical leave on Wednesday afternoon, October 18th. I will likely be out between 2 - 4 weeks, perhaps a little longer. During this time, Mrs. Farias will be in charge.

Don't forget that chocolate money is due on Thursday and there is no school on Friday! Have a wonderful week.

Blessings,

Katie Dempsey

Principal

On February 10th we will host our annual Crab Feed/Auction. You will hear more about this wonderful event in the coming months. There is a committee of parents and staff that put this event together. This group is in charge of putting together auction procurements, securing donations and sponsorships, set-up, event execution, and more. If you would like to serve on the Crab Feed committee please email Sarah McKinney at: smckinney@hrrsjda.org. We usually meet once per month and as the event gets closer twice a month.

Safe Environment for Volunteers!

All volunteers working with or alongside children at the school are required to complete Safe Environment requirements, as mandated by the Archdiocese of Seattle. ****This would include any volunteers assisting in the lunchroom, at recess, in the classroom, accompanying classes on field trips, etc.****

Here are the steps:

  1. New volunteers should go online to VirtusOnline.org to register for an account
  2. Register for a local safe environment class
  3. Read and acknowledge policy documents, and complete the steps for a background check to be performed. An in-person/live safe environment class, called "Protecting God's Children for Adults", is initially required, but thereafter, renewals only need to be completed online once every three years.

You can also get a handy reference sheet in the office, if you would like.

Thank you for your cooperation with this process and for your commitment in keeping our school safe and healthy for our children. Please feel free to contact Colleen Thomson at casmt@comcast.net or 253-389-9606 if you have any questions regarding this process. We value all of our volunteers!
