Two AHS seniors named National Merit Semifinalists
Arlington High's Class of 2023 seniors Mathew Richardson and Matthew Turner are two of only 16,000 high school students nationwide to be named National Merit Semifinalists! Each year, nearly 1.5 million high school juniors across the country take the Preliminary SAT to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. Richardson and Turner represent the Top 1% of highest scorers in the country and are considered among the standouts in Tennessee. They'll now be eligible to compete for finalist status.
WATCH: Hot air balloon descends on AMS for a lesson in STEM
Did you see the hot air balloon descend on Arlington Middle School last week?! 8th Grade STEM has been learning about flight & space - talk about bringing a lesson to life! But the learning goes way beyond STEM. This particular hot air balloon is designed for people with disabilities, so while engineering is at its core, so is empathy. Watch to learn more.
ACS PEP Talks - Understanding Depression
Thursday, September 22nd at 6:00 PM
ACS District Office
Often, what stands in the way of good mental health is unmanaged stress, the catalyst to depression and unhealthy coping. Join us as our Social & Transition Specialists recognize Suicide Prevention Month by sharing some important facts about depression and how you can help your child.
BLAST OFF: AES 4th graders catapult ping pong balls to learn about energy
Why only learn about something from a book when you can see it in real life?! 4th Graders in Ms. Hardy, Ms. Henrikson and Ms. Johnson's classrooms have been learning about potential and kinetic energy and how energy transfers. To put this lesson to the test, students in groups of two constructed catapults using styrofoam cups, rubber bands and balloons to launch ping pong balls through the air. The teams then competed against each other to see whose launch was most successful.
"Potential and kinetic energy are difficult concepts for 4th Graders," Hardy said. "I hope this activity is meaningful to them and something they can reflect on to know how this type of energy occurs in our every day lives."
Follow us on Facebook & Instagram to see this lesson in action (video coming soon!).
Meanwhile, AHS students visit NASA Space Camp...
While 4th graders were blasting off catapults, students in Arlington High's Academy of Engineering & Innovation were touring actual Space Camp at NASA's U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The program is designed to give students hands-on experience in the various careers NASA has to offer. Read more about their trip in this story written by Jake Stoope, ACS Communications Intern.
