Can you answer this?
What is the history of New Year's Day?
Piece of the Puzzle
This Week's Piece of the Puzzle is Tamea Newcomer. Tamea works as a part-time para and as the crossing guard at WAMS. That is one of our most challenging intersections, and she handles it with charisma and grace. She is kind to our students and makes sure they all get to school safely. A few weeks ago she was almost struck by a car that simply refused to stop. Tamea stayed very calm and collected during the stiuation and continued to direct traffic. She is a powerhouse, and we are proud that our district has such a dedicated and caring crossing guard and para. She is definitely a big Piece of the Puzzle.
Please congrulate Tamea Newcomer for being this week's Piece of the Puzzle!
New Policies
Suggested revisions and new policies come from the PA School Board Association, board members, staff, administration, and others. The proposed policy goes to the Policy Committee for review. The Policy Committee will either approve the proposed policy to go to full board for review and adoption, or will deny or wait for a different time to revisit it.
Even though it will not be weekly, stay tuned for any new and/or recently adopted policies in this section.
Challenge Answers
According to the New World Encyclopedia, New Year's Day, and may also be called New Year or New Year's, is observed on January 1, the first day of the year on today's Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar. It is also celebrated in other cultures, such as the Chinese New Year which occurs based on the Chinese calendar.
Many celebrations include large displays of fireworks at midnight, welcoming in the New Year. Today, New Year's celebrations are broadcast around the world as the New Year begins in each time zone. Many traditions involve spending time with friends and family, enjoying sports and other entertainment.

Food Policy Update: White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health
of particular note: Modernize federal programs so enrolled individuals can more easily utilize benefits. Many federal programs were established decades ago. To bring federal nutrition assistance programs into the 21st century:
- USDA, through support from ARP funds, will expand online shopping in WIC.
- Online shopping is currently only being piloted in a small number of WIC state agencies.
- USDA will also propose to update regulations to make the SNAP online shopping program permanent and continue to add more online retailers and states to the existing program.
- Online shopping can expand access to healthy food and break down barriers for marginalized communities and older adults who may face discrimination or stigma, increased health risks, or have limited mobility or transportation.
- Additionally, SNAP participants are not currently able to use their benefits to purchase certain prepared foods, which limits choices for families shopping at SNAP-authorized retailers.
- And, as WIC comes up for renewal by Congress, the Administration supports addressing WIC eligibility limitations to avoid nutrition gaps during key stages of life.
