WSMS Principal Newsletter
September 1, 2023
I hope you and your families have a wonderful long weekend. We started Leopard Time tutorials this week with great success. As the progress report check is approaching, teachers are updating grades and reaching out to parents for partnership as we work together for your student's success. We have linked the UIL Eligibility Calendar below. Please note that students have the opportunity to shop at the book fair next week and make purchases with cash or utilizing the digital wallet. We will see everyone on Tuesday!
It’s book fair time! Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always—every purchase at the Fair benefits our school.
September 5TH – 8TH at the WSMS Library. Open during lunch and Leopard time.
THURSDAY September 7th the book fair will open early (8:00am – 8:30am) and stay late (4:10pm – 5:30pm).
Students can pay via cash, card or eWallet (Scholastic’s digital payment account).
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Book Fair online.

Tardies begin August 28
Our campus will begin to count tardies starting on 8/28. Students who are late will be allowed to enter class, but will be marked as tardy in PowerSchool by staff members. Students who are more than 20 minutes late will be counted absent for that class period.
Students will be assigned a one-hour afternoon detention when they receive 4-6 tardies
Students will be assigned a two-hour detention when they receive 7-9 tardies
Students who persist in being tardy (10+) may receive additional consequences
Tardies reset each 9 weeks.
Visitors to Willow Springs and Office Hours
WSMS office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:35 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Each visitor to our campus is required to show ID at the front doorbell camera and state the reason for the visit before clearance to enter the building. Please wait for the door to be unlocked and do not hold open the door for others who have not yet been verified to enter. When students are signing out, a parent or guardian is required to enter the office to sign them out. We do not send our students outside to waiting vehicles.
Please arrive with a few extra minutes to facilitate this process. We appreciate your partnership in making safety and security our top priority.
Student Support Center Update
Counselor's Message: Upcoming SOS Program
This year school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. We will present to 7th graders on September 27 and 8th graders on September 28 during their History class.
SOS has been used by thousands of schools for over 20 years. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts.
Through the program, students learn:
that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
who they can turn to at school for help
Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk.
We encourage you to visit www.mindwise.org/parents for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. Please note, we will not be conducting the depression screener or exit slip.
If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to not have your child view this presentation, please contact your school counselors.

Stock the Teacher's Lounge
The Willow Springs PTO loves to help our teachers feel appreciated and one of their favorite things is when we stock the teacher's lounge with snacks and drinks. What an easy way to show our appreciation for all of their hard work. Sign up to purchase items either through our Amazon list, and have it delivered directly to the school or through the Sign-Up Genius and deliver items to the front office by noon on September 14th.
Mark your calendar for September 12th from 9:30-10:30! It’s our first Principal Coffee of the year and Mrs. Eldridge will be discussing and answering questions about middle school you’ve been afraid to ask. Use the QR code in the flyer to ask your questions ahead of time
