President's Message
Dear Alpha Gamma Members,
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I don’t know when or where I first heard this, but it definitely describes how I feel about our Alpha Gamma Chapter. This is my last time writing the President’s Message so I want to do some reflection. What I have learned during my time as president and co-president is that our chapter has so much to offer, and we have a truly remarkable and varied group of educators.
Our Alpha Gamma membership numbers have grown, and our average age has dropped significantly. Our committees are now defined. Our communications have grown in quality and quantity with our newsletters, Facebook, and website. Our endowment is established and will be included in this fall’s grant cycle. Our outreach includes Convocations in both Avery and Watauga, the BREMCO Blood Drive, the Blue Ridge Relay, the Woolly Worm Festival, and the Summer Literacy Program at Boone United Methodist Church.
In this newsletter, you will find a list of grants that are available to all of our members. The due date is September 30 so I encourage members to go on line for details and to see which ones match your individual needs.
Kim Shields is moving smoothly into the role of President this fall.
Please be ready to say YES to her when she calls as she also continues to learn about NC DKG! Now, it’s summertime! Good weather! Time with People! Good times are here! Please enjoy and relax this summer. We have all earned it. Thank you for allowing me to serve our chapter!
Sincerely,
Brenda Reese

HELP! Judith’s Moving!
As you may or may not know, Judith was surprised to find out that she is having to move again. She would greatly appreciate any help you can offer! Here is her plea!
I literally am reaching out to see if you’d help me by seeking ‘helpers’....among any willing & available Chapter members. I am planning a SALE here at the house on Friday & Saturday, June 25 & 26 from 8-5 or 5:30. I will need helpers for those days, ideally in shifts so it is short term for everyone. There is a long deck and it will be good to have 2 workers there & 1-2 in the house.... possibly 1 additional. Thursday I’ll need help with the organizing and set up so things are ready. I will also need some additional tables. I hope this is not a burden but an opportunity for support & fellowship. Can we give service points?! Will you send out an appeal!!
My address is 2179 SORRENTO Drive, just off of Friendship Church Rd. 2nd house; long gravel driveway.
Sincere appreciation,
Judy

2021 NC DKG CONVENTION INCLUDES
INSTALLATION OF 2021-2023 OFFICERS
NC DKG convention delegates elected the following officers: Beth Winstead (Beta Alpha), president; Hilda Parler (Gamma Theta), first vice president; Tammy Cullom (Alpha Psi), second vice president; and Patrice “Patty” Higgins (Gamma), secretary. President Winstead reminded us in her acceptance speech, “This organization is made up of powerful and busy women. It takes each of us linked together to be voices of influence empowering NC women educators.” The new state officers will lead us as we are “Linking the Past, Present, and Future” during the next biennium.
FYI: Alpha Gamma Chapter officers serve for two years. Their biennium runs in an even number two year span. State officers serve for two years. Their biennium runs in a odd number two year span.
CELEBRATE NC DKG THEME
NC DKG: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE
During the 2021 NC DKG Convention members were introduced to President Winstead’s new theme: NC DKG: Past, Present, and Future.
“Remembering NC DKG Past” -- Dorothy Carter (Omicron) shared that our Founders’ courage helped to establish an organization intent on improving opportunities for women educators in a time when they had to keep the society a secret. Due to the position of women in society, the secretive aspect remained for most of the 1970s. The organization transitioned to a public entity that still improves opportunities for women and students of all ages.
“Celebrating NC DKG Present” -- Rebecca Keesler (Alpha Theta) reviewed the timeline forward from “planting the seed.” She encouraged members to think about the gifts we bring to NC DKG -- the strength of chapters, the honor of membership, and the growth for yourself and your chapter. Debbie Merritt (Delta Psi) spoke about the creation of the new chapter in Stokes County.
“Shaping NC DKG Future“ -- Ashley Taylor Layton (Alpha Omicron) reminded us that with every strategy used to keep chapters engaged, we learned that a thriving chapter is not so much what we have done or where we have been, but much more where we are willing to go. So we look ahead and remember that faith is always pointed toward the future.

Approximately ten other Beta Upsilon members joined the trio for an early dinner and great conversation. International News
DKG Visibility
Fall 2020, the International Communications and Marketing (C&M) Committee asked state C&M committee chairs how they promoted visibility of DKG to non- members. The answers included methods such as websites, newsletters, social media, public news articles, and DKG brochures. As a result of the data provided, the International C&M Committee invites you to explore alternate options for promoting DKG using electronic platforms that can appeal to all generations.

Instagram – Social media sharing app that allows users to edit and share photos and videos to followers. Refer non-members to this site to offer them a visual snapshot into the Society. - Delta Kappa Gamma Instagram

Arts and Humanities Jury Blog: Available Now
For many, stepping out of one’s comfort zone through the arts is an expression of courage. The reward is the feeling of gratification in the work, whether it be in the visual arts, music, or written word. The key lies within each other to find her true passion and to have the courage to express it.
The DKG International Arts and Humanities Jury has developed a mission to support and encourage members in the various elds of the creative arts. The committee is excited to expand the DKG platform into a new digital space and is offering to connect with members through a monthly creative-arts blog site, Arts & Humanities Jury.
The interactive visual arts, literary, and musical composition blog will provide interesting content and informational links and resources for readers. Topics will include spotlighting artists featured within the DKG Gallery, tips and tricks-of-the trade resources, insights into the motivations of an artist, and Q & A moments to gain insight and knowledge from seasoned artists, writers, and craftsmen.
Join the Jury members in their art-world exploration, where you, as an avid artist, are front and center and forever courageous. Words of Wisdom
Heather Furr constantly posts words of wisdom. She recently shared this Inspiration via educator James Vint in Teacher2Teacher:
“ You must see in kids what they don’t see in themselves.
See them for what they can be, not where they are,
and then teach them accordingly. You may be the
only hope in the lives of many of your students.
Believe in every single one of them every single day!”
Our new member, Anne Marie Younce Sukow, shared the following and apt quote by r.m. drake on Twitter. Think how much this applies to all of us!
“I know it’s easier said than done but you
have to control all of that overthinking
you’ve been doing lately. You’re creating
scenarios that don’t exist . And that’s how
you’re breaking your own heart, love.” ___r.m. drake
A Powerful Lesson in Unity
“Differences presumed and differences observed are meant to spark debate and conversation, not conflict and confrontation.”
