BARFIELD BANNER
NOVEMBER 2022
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We have officially completed the first quarter of the school year! Although Hurricane Ian brought us a rocky start to the beginning of the year, I have no doubt that the difficulties that our friends, families and community faced this past month has united us and made us stronger. It is truly a privilege for the TBE staff to serve such passionate and caring individuals. Our school is forever grateful for the continued support of both our staff and students.
The end of October brought us many fun and exciting events. Our Assembly Leadership Club put on their first assembly with the celebration of the end of quarter one. Spirit Leaders were special guests at the assembly and did a great job of getting everyone excited! We also concluded out 10th Annual Pumpkin Decorating contest with the theme of Marco Island. The students did a fantastic job of displaying the theme this year! Both the students and the staff enjoyed viewing the pumpkins and reading what they were about. Also, our Scholastic Book Fair was a success! Thank you to Mrs. Schneller and Mrs. Grisko for helping to organize the book fair. I would also like to thank the parents that volunteered at the book fair and made sure our students purchased just right books to take home!
As we move into the second quarter of the school year, we look forward to many more events. Our 5th graders are looking forward to performing in our annual Veteran’s Day show on Wednesday, November 9th at 1:30 pm. This show is open to 5th grade parents and their families only. We also encourage local Veteran’s from the community to attend as well. Our kindergarten students will also be performing in a small Thanksgiving show on Thursday, November 17th. Kindergarten teachers will be reaching out to parents soon for more information.
TBE staff is excited to welcome back our long-standing tradition of Thanksgiving Feast! We have not been able to hold our annual feast for the past few years, so further directions and schedules will come in an upcoming email. This Thanksgiving Feast will serve as the “Parent Lunch” for the month of November, and it will include grades K-5 all on Friday, November 18th.
Thanksgiving break will be the week of November 21st-25th. No Hurricane Make Up days are needed, so students will have both Monday and Tuesday off school as well. I hope that your family has time this week to relax and spend time together sharpening the saw.
Our Wonderland Gift Shoppes will be arriving when students return from Thanksgiving Break. If you are new to TBE this year, our Wonderland Gift Shoppe is an in-school holiday shop so children can experience the thrill of "secretly" buying gifts for family and friends. They feature a range of affordable and quality gifts for families. This is something our students really enjoy each year! Look for more information about the Wonderland Shoppe in upcoming Wednesday folders.
Although a busy time of year, TBE staff looks forward to celebrating the many events taking place this next month. We truly feel these events and experiences create lifelong memories for our students.
Thank you for all you do to support your students at home!
Sincerely,
Alyssa Ledbetter
Principal
KINDERGARTEN NEWS
We have so much to be thankful for. Our kindergarteners are doing well and are quite comfortable with their classroom routines and school wide expectations. It is hard to believe that we are already in the second quarter.
In science, topics include changes in matter and sound. There will be many learning goals in social studies and topics include: patriotism, U.S. symbols, honoring veterans, primary sources, and comparing children and families of today with those in the past.
To help support your child at home in math, please continue to practice counting and writing numbers. This quarter, we will focus on addition and subtraction word problems. By the end of the year, your child will need to know how to count to 100 starting from any given number, count to 100 by tens, and write the numbers from 1-20 correctly.
In reading, our students are learning different phonograms and sight words, writing their letters properly, and beginning to read very simple books. Please continue to review the sight words taught in school and have your child read the books sent home. It would also be very beneficial if you read picture books to your child and discuss the stories, such as the characters and setting and making predictions about the stories.
We appreciate all your support and are delighted to be partners in your child’s education.

FIRST GRADE NEWS
Hello First Grade Families!
We have been having so much fun in First Grade, the time is just flying by!
The students have been hard at working learning all about new addition strategies in Math. They have filled their toolboxes with all different ways to solve addition equations and are working on fluency with doubles and within ten.
In reading, they learned all about various text features and how to use them to better understand what they read. We began our module on animals, and we are looking forward to learning all the different ways animals’ bodies help them! Once we have gathered all our information, students will write an expository piece about an animal of their choice to share what they have learned.
During Connect for Success and LEAD time, we have continued to dig a little deeper into our 7 Habits and began our Leadership Guides to help us apply the Habits to real life situations. Be sure to ask your students about the habits we are covering each week!
As we move through quarter two, we are looking forward to some fun fall and holiday lessons and events. Be on the lookout for additional information regarding these activities in Wednesday Folders and on Class Tag.
As always, be sure to have your students read to you each night! Thanks for all you are doing to support our learners!
Sincerely,
The First Grade Team
SECOND GRADE NEWS
As the month of November draws near and Thanksgiving break approaches, we want to publicly extend our heartfelt gratitude to our students, families, administrators, fellow teachers, and employees. We want to THANK YOU for your unwavering support of TBE and for being partners in education. Each year we find new reasons to be thankful and after watching everyone in our community rally together after Hurricane Ian, we are once again reminded and thankful of how special of a place we live, work and call home! As our learning continues through the second nine weeks, second grade readers and writers will be learning about how people can work out disagreements. Students will continue to learn phonics skills such as final blends, closed syllables, double final consonants, and consonant digraphs. Students will use texts such as Meet Me Halfway, Working with Others, and Pepita and the Bully to build comprehension skills such as identifying the central idea and relevant details, identifying, and explaining the theme, and retelling a text to enhance comprehension. In math, second grade students will add within 10 with automaticity; and add two numbers with sums from 11 to 20 with procedural reliability. They will use number relationships to develop addition strategies within one hundred. In Science, students will be able to understand that people use electricity or other forms of energy. They will focus on the ways energy impact our lives (electrical energy, solar energy, light energy, heat energy, and sound energy). Students will also begin investigating the effect of applying various pushes and pulls on different objects and that the greater the force (push or pull) applied to an object, the greater the change in motion of the object. In Social Studies, students in second grade will continue to learn about government, the United States Constitution, and symbols representing the United States. Students will also shift focus to learning about geography focusing on learning about maps and globes. Continue to have your child practice the 7 Habits at home, read for at least 20 minutes each night, and support your child by reviewing their nightly homework skill sheet.
Love, Your Second Grade Teachers
THIRD GRADE NEWS
Third graders are working hard this 2nd quarter!
The students are still working on their multiplication fluency in Math. Multiplication is a large part of the 3rd grade math curriculum and the students have been singing their facts songs. Please have your child continue to practice these songs at home. They have been learning about strategies and properties to help them solve their multiplication equations. We also have started solving division equations. In Reading, the children have focused on text features, main idea, and key details. In Writing, the students wrote a letter to a family member to talk about their goals this school year. In Science, the students learned about the parts of a plant and their function. During Social Studies, the students identified the different levels of government.
Please continue to read with your child every night and practice multiplication facts. We appreciate all your help and support at home!

FOURTH GRADE
Hello Fourth Grade Families!
It is hard to believe that it is already November and that the second quarter is in full swing. We loved meeting with our Leader Clubs last month and are looking forward to our next meeting. We will continue to work with our new Reading standards and curriculum. This quarter we will be focusing on text features, figurative language, and the theme of a story. Students are really enjoying the stories and be sure to ask them to summarize what we have read for you! In Math we are continuing to work with multiplication and division. Be sure to ask your student to teach you all the different strategies they have learned and what strategy they enjoy using the most. We also continue to work on our Math Fact Fluency. Knowing our multiplication facts fluently will make long division so much smoother! We started quarter 2 in Social Studies by learning about the Native American tribes that inhabited Florida. We will continue to learn about how these tribes were influenced by the different explorers that came to Florida. In Science continue to talk about energy and food chains before we move into our study of rocks and minerals.
The month of November brings us to focus on Habit 3: Put First Things First. Talk with your student about what it means to spend time on things that are most important, set priorities, make a schedule, follow a plan, and to be disciplined and organized. How do you and your family demonstrate Habit 3?

FIFTH GRADE NEWS
Hello, Fifth Grade Families!
We hope everyone is recovering well from the hurricane. Please continue to let us know of needs you may have as the weeks go by and situations evolve. We are happy to support your family!
Coincidentally, our current Reading module is focused on Natural Disasters. The students have many answers to the Module 3 Essential Question: How can learning about natural disasters make us safe? Reading non-fiction articles and short stories about natural disasters has proven to be a helpful way for the students to reflect and process through our own recent experiences. It is a fascinating topic to practice our reading and writing skills.
Similarly, we have been studying weather in science. Students have looked at various weather patterns, cloud formations, and climates. We are well on our way to becoming expert meteorologists. Ask your child if he/she can tell you what an anemometer is!
In Math, students are multiplying multidigit numbers and working with decimals.
Students are establishing goals and create a plan to reach them in both LEAD once a week with Officer Guyer and in Connect for Success with the classroom teacher on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Please reach out via ClassTag, email, or phone if you have any questions. It is amazing to see our students grow and shine!

ARTISTS STROKES
Kinder is currently working value. They made pumpkins that were various shades of orange and leaves that are various shades of green. They did this by learning about primary colors and how to mix them to create secondary colors.
First grade learned about horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines creating their scarecrows.
Second and third grade learned a little about the desert and creatures within. They also observed sunsets and silhouettes to create our sunset desert paintings.
Fourth and fifth grade students learned about Tim Burton and his movies. Afterwards they got to be creative and make their own Tim Burton Self-Portraits.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS
October passed by quick and the CCPS 5K Race was rescheduled for Saturday, December 10th! If you’d like to join our TBE team in the 1-mile or 5K sign up here: https://runsignup.com/Race/Register/RaceGroup-1153722?raceId=25617
In our physical education classes, we will begin working on some skill work involving throwing, rolling, and dribbling in a variety of activities this quarter. Our focus, however, is always sportsmanship – following directions, treating others with respect, playing honestly, resolving conflicts appropriately, etc. We end class every Monday and Friday with “High Fives.” This gives students the opportunity to recognize each other for positive things they witnessed or experienced in PE class
A few tips to remember throughout the year:
-Students should bring a note if they cannot fully participate in PE. A parent note is acceptable for a day, but a doctor’s note is required for an extended period of time.
-Students should wear sneakers every day and practice tying their own shoes.
-Shorts should be worn under dresses/skirts so that students can play comfortably.

Intermediate students in grades 3 and 4 learn and practice using Digital Media. Beginning with district online research resources to take notes on a topic. Following this, we will create multimedia projects communicating our learning using a variety of program. Please check that your student has working🎧 headphones / earbuds to bring daily to school. Also, students in grades 2-5 can practice typing in the district website Typing Club for 10 minutes 3 times per week at home.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
“Dear Parents/Guardians,
At TBE, each classroom chooses two Leaders of the Month every month. The students in the class write on the Leaders’ photos positive descriptive words. Then the photos are placed on a bulletin board in the cafeteria.
This would be a nice thing to replicate at home. Either daily or weekly, family members can share how each member of the family demonstrated they were a leader. For instance, ____________________ was a leader by doing homework every day without being asked. __________________ helped another family member with an extra chore. ___________________ played nicely together. A photo of the family member exhibiting the leadership act and placing on a bulletin board, refrigerator, etc. would be a bonus. “Calling out the gold” can bring positivity to your family togetherness.
Sincerely,
Leanne Hope
School Counselor”
NURSE STATION
Welcome to November. It is the season of pumpkin spice and cool breezes. November is also National Diabetes Awareness Month. It appears to be that more students are being diagnosed each year with diabetes. One of the best ways to avoid diabetes is by staying healthy, eating well balanced meals and proper exercise and a good sleeping pattern. It is a disease that is also hereditary that cannot be prevented.
As I say in every newsletter, please make sure to keep all your phone numbers and addresses current with the school. If any of them need to be updated call the front office @ 239-377-8500 and they can update them for you.
All medications need to come to the school by parent or guardian. Please do not send them into school with a child. The proper paperwork also needs to be in place as well for all medications. All prescription medications need to have the prescription label with the child’s name on it and it needs to specify a school time on the orders and label. All over the counter medications need to be non -expired and in an unopened package and age appropriate for your child.
Remember time change occurs on November 6,2022 which means it will be getting dark earlier so be safe and always look around for our little ones out there playing. Thank you and enjoy the November festivities with your family, loved ones and friends.
