3rd & 4th Grade Parents - Please Read Regarding Upcoming State Testing

Parents/Guardians of 3rd & 4th Graders:


Our first state testing is arriving soon! IREAD-3 (3rd graders only) will be testing on Tuesday 3/19 and Wednesday 3/20. State guidelines mandate that all staff and students must not have access to smartphones, smartwatches, tablets during testing times. We must be void of any electronic device that could audio or video record and/or take photos. We highly recommend on these two dates + during future ILEARN testing dates that students do not wear or bring their smartwatches and/or smartphones/tablets.


However, if these items are worn or brought to school, we will ask students to remove these items and place them in a secure location. We will also ensure they are placed in a way that we can identify which electronics belong to which students. Thank you!

Miss Wetzel's Counselor Corner

We started to recognize students who are seen practicing their Steps to Strong in Every Way skills by giving them golden tickets! Students can earn golden tickets when they are seen showing compassion, empathy, managing strong emotions, being assertive, or problem solving! Students can place their ticket in a raffle and a couple tickets are pulled every Friday! The students whose tickets were drawn receive a golden metal and attend a celebratory breakfast at the end of the month!


For the month of February, we had over 160 golden tickets submitted in the raffle!! It has been so wonderful to hear the children share their reason for earning their golden ticket(s).


The winners of the golden ticket raffle this month were Marley Kerkhof, Bryn Trout, Wyatt Bruner, Will Ribolzi, Aydin Figirova, Hadley Kortepeter, Reid Lahr, Bethany Starwalt, and Alaya Stewart!


We are so proud of ALL of the students who earned a golden ticket for the month of February!

SGE Spotlight: Wellness

Students have been moving and grooving to the beat since Winter Break! Who knew a bucket, pool noodles, and some upbeat tunes could provide so much exercise and laughter? Students were drumming and dancing their way fit. Third and Fourth grade students also had an opportunity to create their own fitness drumming routine and share with their classmates. I was certainly impressed with their creativity as well as their rhythmic skills. Videos we used in class are available on our Wellness Canvas page. When they are cooped up and needing some fun, indoor movement options-don't forget to check Canvas! Following our drumming and dance unit, we moved into important foundational movements of jumping, leaping, hopping and skipping. We often think these movements are performed by students naturally, but these skills need to be practiced as much as any movement skill in order to develop agility, balance, and coordination. All of which are crucial for functional movement and sport. Students have traversed many obstacles as well as explored using a jump rope individually and with a group. The addition of the rope supports the development of temporal, spatial, and proprioceptive awareness. Along with our physical activities, we are learning about our body systems and how all of our movement and exercise helps us be stronger in every way.


Mrs. Torrance encourages all students to have gym shoes EVERYDAY for safe, active movement in the gym. Please remind your child to wear, pack, or leave a pair of gym shoes at school every day.

Kindergarten Preregistration and Round Up

Dear SGE Families,

Our registration for Kindergarten Round-Up is now LIVE! If you have a child who will be in Kindergarten next year, make sure to "Save the Date" for SGE's Kindergarten Round Up (KRU) on Thursday, April 11th, 2019.Then, be sure to sign up for a Kindergarten Round Up Session on our website (you may need to scroll down just a little to see the KRU link). Please share this information with friends and family who have incoming kindergarten students that will be attending Stonegate next year. Thank you!

Stonegate Spring Fling

Stonegate Spring Fling is on March 23rd from 3:00-7:00pm.


Join the Stonegate PTO for a family fun day at Stonegate Elementary featuring carnival games, paint your own pottery, and a silent auction. All of the proceeds will be given to Stonegate in the form of a spring grant.


The silent auction will feature teacher and staff experiences like we have offered in the past. Also, if you own a business or provide a service and would like to put something in the auction we would love to include it! SGE Go Far Running Club: Grades 3rd-4th- Go Far is a 10-week comprehensive fitness program designed to teach children of all abilities about healthy eating, goal setting and how to train to walk/run a 5k. Club will meet each Wednesday beginning March 6th. Club will not meet the week of spring break. Our final club meeting will be May 15th. The final 5K event will be the Schools Out 5K on Thursday, May 23rd in Zionsville. GO FAR Club participation fee will cover the cost of entry for this event.

2019 Jog-A-Thon

Planning for our 9th Annual Jog-A-Thon is well under way! The event will take place on Wednesday, September 25th at each of Zionsville's five elementary schools. The planning committee is accepting bids for the production of more than 3000 Jog-A-Thon T-shirts. If interested, please email Melissa Waters at sgejat@gmail.com with notation that you would like the opportunity to bid. Upon receipt of your email, we will forward you a Request For Proposal. Anne Frank Panel Exhibit

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis (JFGI) have partnered with the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect (NYC) to bring to Indianapolis their exhibit, “Anne Frank: A History for Today.” The 32 panel exhibit will be displayed at ZCHS until the end of March in the lobby of our Performing Arts Center. The panels tell the story of Anne Frank and her life in the secret annex. We are honored to have the opportunity to join the group of community centers, schools and universities, arts organizations, libraries and museums all around the world who have hosted this display.

We are offering community viewings on Tuesday, March 12th from 9:00 – 11:00 am and Wednesday, March 13th from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Docents will be available during these times to answer questions about the panels. Our community members can park by the ZCHS Performing Arts Center and enter through Door 8. Save the Date!

April 23, 2019, from 7:00-8:30PM: In our Performing Arts Center -- first in a series of community gatherings with two brief (15 minutes each) keynote talks followed by a panel discussion on matters of racism, anti-Semitism, ostracism, and more. We are pleased to be able to host the first in this series that we expect to move to Zionsville and Whitestown Town Halls, and elsewhere. Initial planning was an outgrowth of the Zionsville Area Ministerial Association in conjunction with the Zionsville Community Schools and the Town of Zionsville. Admission will be free, but tickets are required and will be made available when the program speakers are confirmed. (Free childcare for threes and above who are potty-trained will be announced on the ticket website.)

2019-20 ZCS BYOD System Requirements

Community Schools is a 1:1 school district that encourages all students to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). We do have rental machines available for $132.50 a year but 85% of the students actually bring a device they own. When purchasing a device, please keep the minimum requirements below in mind. The minimal changes made to the requirements are directly related to the software needed to run ILEARN testing and the ability to access our encrypted network for safety. One item to note is that the 19-20 school year will be the last year that Chromebooks will work in our system.

 Windows 10, 8 or 8.1, no RT or Windows 10S. Please note that support for Windows 7 will end January 14, 2020.

 Chrome OS 72 (Chromebooks not supported with Project Lead the Way applications) *19-20 is the last year Chromebooks will work for the 5-12 BYOD program.

 Linux OS not recommended

Browsers:

 Safari 12 (minimum)

 Chrome 71 (minimum)

 Firefox 65 (minimum)

Other items to consider

 Laptop weight and size (carried all day to classes)

 Is there a warranty if the device is damaged? Can it be covered under homeowner's insurance?

 If a problem occurs with the device at home or at school, a loaner from ZCS is available for up to 10 days a year.

o This includes information on how to access free downloads of Office 2016.

o Antivirus needed? At no cost, students can download the Avast or AVG as well.

BACKGROUND CHECK INFORMATION

We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.

Examples include:

  • Field Trip Chaperones
  • Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
  • Tutors
  • Volunteer Coaches
  • Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
  • Library Helpers
  • After Prom Workers
  • Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
  • Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales

During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS

During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government-issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.

Examples Include:

  • Lunch Guests
  • Classroom Guest Speakers
  • Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences

We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.

Did You Know?

ZCS, like other public schools, has a no-idling policy for vehicles on campus. The purpose of the policy is to limit vehicle emissions that might be brought into the schools and adversely impact the health of our students and staff. If you are stopped on campus for more than 5 minutes, please remember to turn off your engine. We thank you for abiding by this policy to help reduce the exposure to these emissions.
