Apps In The Classroom
Shmuppet
A free app that allow students to create video recordings using puppets. Students can create 30 second videos, and than send them to their friends via social media. This app would be great for elementary students, in grades 2 and 3. Grade 2 and 3 students can use this app to develop creativeness and their storytelling/creating skills. In these grades students begin to understand how to build a proper story with a character, conflict, and resolution. This app allows them to begin in a short and simple way creating a character through the use of a fun puppet, and than telling a quick story with conflict and resolution. Best of all the students can share their stories with their friends and classmates via social media. At this stage many children have a broad understanding of social media and they enjoy using it any time they can. Also by encouraging creativity at this stage it can inspire students to continue being creative in everything they do, and express their opinions and thoughts on different issues and topics.
SMART PIRATE
Smart Pirate. First adventure - Fun Educational Game for iPad
SMART PIRATE
The short video above shows just one of the 4 games in one included in this awesome app. Smart Pirate includes 4 fraction games for simple factions, equivalents, comparison, and addition. Students can play the games on three levels, progressing higher as they become more knowledgable and confident in their skills. The game creates a story line to help keep the kids involved, and it also includes a truing model to ensure the kids understand the game. This app, although its not free is only $3.00. It could be used by elementary students to help them work on their fraction skills. I know as an elementary student fractions was always something I struggled with. This games creates a new and fun way to approach learning fractions. Each student can go at their own pace, and the app is very clear and easy to use. Also I believe by incorporating a story aspect to it, in this case pirates, the students are more encouraged to play and keep advancing in the game. Also another reason why this app would be so successful for students is that is covers 4 main aspects of fractions, not just one. This will give the students a broader and better understanding of them as a whole.
PCM
PCM
PCM is an app for secondary students to aid them in the learning of physics, chemistry, and math. The app covers the basic topics and lessons for all three subjects, along with tutorials, quizzes, and flashcards. This app would be great for high school students because it covers the three topics that I believe most high schools students struggle with the most. Each app covers over 10 of the concepts taught in these courses and helps the students work through problems and find and fix their mistakes. I think this app is great because when students are struggling with a specific concept or idea they can use this app to help them better understand and practice it. This app would also be a great study tool for students to help them have a complete review, and again be able to see where they went wrong or a concept that they need to study of focus on more. I believe that this app would greatly enhance the success of any student who requires help and for whatever reason cannot use their teacher or other classmates as a resource.
The Human Body by Tinybop
The Human Body
This app is all about exploring the working body. Every part is animated and interactive allowing the students to see the different parts, and names of the body, as well as see what they do in the body, and how they do it. It also has a recording mode to allow parents and students to record and ask one another questions. This app is recommended for ages 4+, and has a variety of different learning levels. I think that this app would be ideal for middle school or high school students who are learning about the body, and the different systems of the body. It is a very interactive app, which for difficult concepts is the best for students to learn and gain a better understanding. This app is also very eye appealing as it shows just in the review different systems of the body, much like the images above. I think this app would be great to allow the students to explore, each at their own level, and "dig" into the human body one system and layer at a time.
Freefall Spelling
Best Apps - Freefall Spelling
Freefall Spelling
Check out the video above for the description of this app. Also take note that this app includes other features such as 150+ pre spelt words for kids to learn, ways to add your own custom words, and rewards for getting several words in a row right. I think that this app would be great for any elementary, and middle school child who is learning how to spell, or wants to advance their spelling, or even just studying for their weekly spelling exam. This app introduces a new and fun way for kids to learn how to spell, and gives them a fun and interactive way to do so. Also I think the best part is that students can put their own words in their. This makes studying for spelling tests so much easier for the students to accomplish individually and they can know for sure that they got it right, or if they made a mistake.
