Jonathan Alder High School
Week 19: January 8-12, 2018
Good Morning and Welcome Back!
Sort of a disjointed beginning to 2018, but it is to be expected with our Ohio weather. This created a little more of an extended break and hopefully, we can get back into a routine next week. If you have questions about winter weather procedures or notifications, please see the details outlined below.
Today also marked the end of the first semester. We will still begin the 2nd semester as planned on Monday. Second-semester schedules can be found in Progress Book. We will work with those individual students that have specific situations to wrap-up any first semester issues. Please, if you have questions, contact the teacher directly. They will have the most details to help develop a solution.
The second semester welcomes in a flurry of activities. These weekly updates and the HS website will be your best place to stay on top of coming activities. Please feel free to share this newsletter broadly and often. If you ever have concerns, do not hesitate to contact the school directly. We will be happy to assist you.
Enjoy the unexpected long-weekend! Be safe and warm.

Winter Weather Procedures
2. Arrival time on a 2-hour delay is 9:30.
3. If you have a young driver please encourage them to leave a little earlier. As you can imagine adding weather to already congested traffic on Rt. 42 is quite an adventure.
4. Seniors that drive and park in the senior lot should attempt to enter in the NORTH entrance and drive around the school to enter the lot. This helps cars leaving from the south entrance.
5. If you are dropping off your child, turn into the south entrance and drop in the front of the school. Please pull as far forward as possible. This will alleviate back-up.
Thank you and if you have any questions let us know.
Student Attendance
Research and Facts About School Attendance
Definitions and Policies
If school is in session students are expected to attend. Please remind students of attendance policies and changes. See below for details.
It is important for your child to attend school every day. When your student misses a significant amount of school, even if the absences are excused, students miss critical instruction time and learning opportunities. This often has long-term, negative effects on a child, such as lower achievement and a greater chance of not graduating on time. HB 410 defines excessive absence and truancy:
EXCESSIVE ABSENCE: a student misses 38 or more hours of school in a single month, or 65 or more hours in one school year, with or without a legitimate excuse.
- Legitimate excuse-is defined in the JAHS Student Handbook pg. 42
- In extreme cases, JALSD Policy 5410 "Loss of Credit Due to Absence" may be applied. In order to earn credit in courses, students need to be in class.
TRUANCY: a student is absent from school without legitimate excuse for 30 or more consecutive hours, 42 or more hours in one school month, or 72 or more hours in a school year.
Parent Tips for Improved Student Attendance
Missing 10% of the school year can dramatically impact the academic success of students. Please help us create continuity for our students.
- Emphasize the importance of going to school every day.
- Use a calendar at home and in the classroom to celebrate good or improved attendance each week.
- Discuss the importance of a regular bedtime and a morning routine.
- Create a backup plan to get to school if your student misses the bus.
- Schedule medical appointments for after school hours.
- Contact the teacher to find out what your child missed and make a plan to complete the work if your student must miss school because of illness.
- Seek advice from teachers, school counselors or other parents to make sure your student feels comfortable coming to school and is excited to learn.
- Keep track of all absences.
